Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram represents process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, for making fabric from bomboo total 9 steps are included such as planting, harvesting, cutting, softening fibres, filtration, crushing, spinning, weaving, and final stage is making cloths.

The process starts from planting the bamboo plants in spring and harvesting it around Autumn. In the next stage, the harvested bamboo plants are cut into strips and sent to crush the strips for extracting the liqiud pulp from it.

The next steps includes filtering and softening fibres in which first the long fibres are seprated from liquid and then the water and aimne oxide is added for the softening of fibres. In seventh step the soften fibre is converted to yarn by spining. At last the fibre is woven for making the fabrics from which cloths are made.

In conclusion, from planitng the plants in spring to making the cloths from it in total nine steps are required.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the main parts of the task by outlining the overall process of making fabric from bamboo across the nine stages shown in the diagram. An overview is successfully provided at the beginning, noting the total number of steps involved. However, some aspects of the process are described rather mechanically or slightly out of sequence; for instance, the details regarding crushing, filtering, and softening fibres are grouped together in a way that lacks precise sequencing and glosses over some of the specific mechanical actions depicted in the diagram. While the main features are reported, certain stages are under-developed, keeping the response at this level. To reach a higher standard, the writer should ensure that every stage is described clearly and in the exact chronological order presented, avoiding over-generalisation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is utilised to separate different stages of the process, which helps guide the reader through the text. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'The process starts', 'In the next stage', and 'In conclusion' are employed to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression between sentences could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring that referencing is consistently precise and natural throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'harvesting', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', 'fibres', 'yarn', and 'fabrics'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'bomboo' instead of 'bamboo', 'liqiud' instead of 'liquid', 'aimne' instead of 'amine', 'spining' instead of 'spinning', and 'planitng' instead of 'planting'. Additionally, the phrase 'making cloths' is used where 'making clothes' or 'producing garments' is appropriate. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score. To improve, the writer must pay closer attention to spelling and select precise collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'in which first the long fibres are seprated from liquid'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, including missing articles ('represents process', 'is added for the softening'), subject-verb agreement issues ('harvesting it', where 'it' is plural bamboo plants), and a missing full stop between sentences ('Autumn. In the next stage'). Despite these errors, the structures used do not impede communication. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles, prepositions, and punctuation.
