IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing of the fabric from bamboo consisting various steps and process. Starting from the collection of fully grown plant bamboo goes through various processings in order to get the fabric made out of it.

Overall, the process starts from the collection of plant bamboo to harvestation of it and then cut them into strips by using a machine. After turning them into strips, the water and amine oxide are added into it to soften the fibres. The next step is the filteration of the soften fibers separating the long fibres from the liquid to make it more smoother.

Although after filteration it goes for the crushing process to extract the liquid pulp out of it. After turning it into thread it goes for the spinning process to make a yarn. Eventually, the yarn weaves to make a fabric and turning it into a desired piece of clothing consists any type of fabric whether it is socks or a t-shirt.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially and exhibits confusion regarding the sequence of steps in the diagram. For instance, the student states that after filtration, the material 'goes for the crushing process', whereas the diagram clearly shows crushing occurs before filtration. Additionally, the overview is limited and lacks a clear summary of the main stages, such as the agricultural phase, chemical processing, and final production. While the text attempts to report the process, the inaccurate sequencing and limited development of several stages mean the response fails to provide a fully clear or accurate account of the visual information, keeping the task achievement score at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with paragraphs attempting to follow the stages of the diagram, but there is no clear overall progression due to sequencing errors in the body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes awkward or inaccurate, such as 'Although after filteration it goes for the crushing process', which disrupts the logical flow of the explanation. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and the mechanical transition between ideas hinders the overall readability of the report. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that logical connectors accurately reflect the true chronological and physical sequence of the process.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited but minimally adequate to describe a manufacturing process. The response contains noticeable word choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'plant bamboo', 'harvestation', 'more smoother', and 'consists any type of fabric'. There are also spelling errors like 'filteration'. These lexical inaccuracies and non-standard collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted range of vocabulary. To reach a higher band, the writer should learn correct derivatives like 'harvest' instead of 'harvestation', avoid double comparatives like 'more smoother', and use precise process verbs naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic active forms. Attempts at more complex structures frequently result in faulty syntax and grammatical errors, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms in phrases like 'the yarn weaves to make a fabric'. There are also frequent errors in article usage and word forms within grammatical patterns. These recurring mistakes require the reader to occasionally puzzle over the meaning, which is characteristic of this grammatical level. Incorporating accurate passive voice structures, which are essential for describing technical processes, would greatly improve the grammatical range.
