IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pictorial representation below shows the process of manufacturing bamboo fabric.
Bamboo plants are planted in spring, harvested in autumn and cut into strips afterwards. Then water and amine oxide is added to soften the fibers, after which the long fibers are filtered out from the liquid.
The strips are then crushed to make liquid pulp, after which it is spun to make ya.
Then, finally, they are woven to make fabric which are then sewn into wearable clothes to be sold to the general public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, finishing at only 86 words, which restricts the depth of the response. The student attempts to describe the diagram showing how bamboo fabric is manufactured, but the summary is minimal and misses several key intermediate steps and relationships. Specifically, the process order described in the middle of the text is somewhat confused; for example, crushing the strips into liquid pulp (Step 4) and filtering (Step 5) are placed out of strict sequence relative to softening the fibers. Because the information is presented only minimally and with notable omissions and sequencing flaws, the response sits at a lower band level. To improve, the writer must ensure all steps of the diagram are covered thoroughly in the correct chronological order and expand the response well beyond the 150-word threshold.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a basic attempt at logical organization, utilizing sequencing markers such as 'Then', 'after which', and 'finally' to guide the reader through the stages of the manufacturing process. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped, consisting of very short, choppy paragraphs that lack a cohesive overall progression. Referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the sudden jump between steps without fully connecting the flow of ideas. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to group related steps into well-structured paragraphs and use a wider, more natural variety of cohesive devices to create a smoother, more seamless transition between the various stages of the diagram.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description of the process, featuring appropriate general terms such as 'manufacturing', 'harvested', 'fibers', and 'liquid pulp'. However, the lexical range is limited, and there is a noticeable spelling error ('ya' instead of 'yarn') alongside minor inaccuracies in word choice and process terminology. The writer relies heavily on basic vocabulary and repeats simple structures without demonstrating the ability to use less common lexical items with precision. To improve, the student should incorporate a broader range of precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes and carefully proofread the work to eliminate basic spelling and lexical slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and moderately complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses introduced by 'after which'. There are several instances of grammatical control, but also notable errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'water and amine oxide is added' (where 'are' or plural agreement would be expected) and 'fabric which are then sewn' (subject-verb agreement mismatch with the singular antecedent 'fabric'). Punctuation is generally basic but manageable. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy, ensuring meticulous attention to agreement rules, verb forms, and singular/plural consistency throughout the text.
