IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The flow chart illustrates a nine-steps process of how bamboo fabric is manfactured.
The process goes through nine different steps where initially a bamboo plant is planted in the spring season (1). Harvest the grown plant in the autumn (2). Use a blade or cutter to cut the plant into the strips (3). Crush these strips to extract the liquid out of them (4). Filter the liquid to separate the long fibres from it (5). Now, add these separated fibres into water and amine oxide to soften them (6). When the fibres are soften, spin them to make a yarn (7). Now, weave this yarn to sew and and make different fabrics from it (8). The final products are ready to use (10).
So, this was the process through which the bamboo plant is used to make the bamboo fabrics, and different products like socks and sweaters can be made from this fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and include several key steps, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, filtering fibres, softening them, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. However, the account is only a partial and sometimes inaccurate report of the diagram. The final stage is numbered 9, not 10, and the diagram shows clothing items rather than simply saying the products are ready to use. You also say the strips are crushed “to extract the liquid,” whereas the label says they are crushed to make liquid pulp. There is no clear overview of the process’s main phases, and the claim that it produces “sweaters” is not supported by the image. Cover the stages more precisely and summarise the progression from growing bamboo to finished clothing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in the correct general order, and sequencing expressions such as “initially,” “Now,” and “The final products” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, most of the account is compressed into one paragraph, and the repeated use of “Now” makes the linking somewhat mechanical. The opening repeats the idea that the process has nine steps without giving a useful overview, while the closing sentence restates the process rather than adding a clear summary. Use a separate overview and group the stages into logical phases, such as cultivation and processing, followed by yarn, fabric and clothing production. Check that references such as “them” clearly identify the fibres.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “filter,” “fibres,” “soften,” “spin” and “weave,” so the reader can understand the main actions. There is some variety in how you describe the stages, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for this diagram. “Extract the liquid out of them” does not accurately express making liquid pulp, and “weave this yarn to sew” combines two different actions. “Different fabrics” is also less precise than the diagram’s finished fabric and clothing. Spelling errors such as “manfactured” are noticeable, and “nine-steps process” is not a natural phrase. Aim for accurate process collocations and proofread spelling; for example, describe the material as being crushed into pulp and the yarn as being woven into fabric.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both short statements and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, some sentence forms are incomplete or awkward: “Harvest the grown plant in the autumn” and “Use a blade or cutter…” are imperatives rather than consistently formed descriptions of a process. There are also errors in agreement and verb forms, as in “a nine-steps process” and “When the fibres are soften.” The phrase “weave this yarn to sew and and make” contains a repeated conjunction and an unclear construction. Use consistent passive forms, such as “the bamboo is harvested” and “the fibres are softened,” and check articles, plurals and sentence boundaries. These corrections would make the process description more controlled while preserving its clear sequence.
