IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates process involved in manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the whole process in completed in nine major steps starting from harvesting bamboo, crushing their strips, filtering fibres, softening them and making yarn to produce clothes. It follows a linear path.
During spring, young bamboo plants are planted in the field. They are allowed to grow properly till autumn. The workers harvest the bamboo stems from their base using knives and cut them into thin lontitudinal strips using a blade cutter. The strips are crushed properly till liquid pulp is obtained. The liquid is filtered from liquid to separate long fibres.
The fibres are softened by soaking them in solution of water and amine oxide. Afterwards, the thin long strands are spun to make round yarn when they dry. These are woven to make fabric. Finally, different clothes like t-shirts, socks, etc are manufactured by dying them with different colours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main stages and give a clear overview of the process, noting its progression from planting through fibre preparation to yarn, fabric and clothing. The seasonal details—planting in spring and harvesting in autumn—and the use of water and amine oxide are accurately included. The account is generally well selected and sufficiently developed for the task. However, the overview says the process starts with harvesting, although planting is the first stage, and it omits the final numbered stage of producing clothing as a distinct step. The claim that clothes are dyed is not shown in the diagram. Keep the overview aligned with the full sequence and avoid adding unsupported details to make the final stage more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a brief introduction and overview followed by a chronological description, and the sequence is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “During spring,” “Afterwards,” and “Finally” help guide the reader through the stages. The paragraphing also separates the general summary from the process details. Some connections could be more precise: “The liquid is filtered from liquid” repeats the same idea and makes the relationship between filtering and separating fibres unclear. In addition, the overview’s sequence skips planting and does not clearly distinguish the final clothing stage. Use concise transitions that reflect the diagram’s exact order, and make references such as “these” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushed,” “pulp,” “fibres,” “softened,” “spun,” and “woven.” These terms help describe the stages with reasonable precision, and the meaning remains clear. Some choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “filtered from liquid” is repetitive, “round yarn” is not a natural description, and “blade cutter” is less appropriate than a direct term for the cutting equipment. There are also spelling errors, notably “lontitudinal” and “dying” where the intended process is colouring fabric. This shows adequate range and some attempts at more specific vocabulary, but greater accuracy in collocation and spelling would make the description more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the time clause “During spring…” and the passive construction “The fibres are softened…”. Most stages are expressed in a way that readers can understand. Some grammatical errors remain, such as “process involved” without an article, “the whole process in completed” instead of “is completed,” and “in solution” without “a.” The sentence “The liquid is filtered from liquid to separate long fibres” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the action and its object. Review articles, verb forms, and sentence construction, especially when describing materials moving through a stage. More consistently accurate sentences would strengthen an otherwise understandable account.
