IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrate the process by which fabric is made through bamboo tree.

Overall, the process of making fabric involves 9 steps starting from a plant of bamboo and ends with making a final product which is fabric(cloth).

The process begin with production of a bamboo plant in spring which is followed by harvesting the plant in autumn. The harvested plant then cut into the strips and the strips crush to make a liquid pulp.

Futhermore, the process continues by separating the long fibres from that liquid pulp generally through filteration. Water and amino oxide plays a vial role and has been added to that filterated fibres in order to soften the fibres which then spin to make yam. Yam weaving leads towards the second last step which is fabric. Fabric used to make clothes which we wear such as shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a nine-step sequence and give a relevant overview, from planting bamboo to producing fabric and clothing. Several key stages are reported accurately, including harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the overview is imprecise: the final numbered stage shows finished clothing, rather than simply “making a final product which is fabric.” Some details are also unclear or inaccurate, such as saying the fibres are softened with “amino oxide” rather than amine oxide, and describing the final fabric as the “second last step.” The response is 143 words, below the required 150. Add a little more precise description of the final stages and clarify the sequence to cover the process more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview and a description of the stages in sequence. Linking phrases such as “which is followed by” and “Futhermore” help show progression, and the reader can generally follow the process. However, the final paragraph combines several stages in a dense sequence, making the relationships between filtering, softening, spinning and weaving less clear. “Yam weaving leads towards the second last step” is particularly difficult to follow. Use one or two sentences to group the processing stages, then state clearly that fabric is woven before clothing is produced. Check that each reference, such as “that liquid pulp,” has an unmistakable antecedent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “soften” and “weaving,” which allows you to describe the main stages. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling or form errors reduce precision: “through bamboo tree,” “filteration,” “filterated,” “vial role” and “yam” are not appropriate in context. “Production of a bamboo plant” is also less natural than describing the planting or growing of bamboo. Aim to use accurate process terms consistently, and proofread spelling carefully. More precise verbs such as “separate,” “soften,” “spin” and “weave” can make the sequence clearer without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, for example, “The harvested plant then cut into the strips and the strips crush to make a liquid pulp.” However, errors in verb forms and agreement occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward. The opening should be “The diagram illustrates,” while “The process begin” needs subject–verb agreement and “then cut” requires a passive form (“is then cut”). In “Water and amino oxide plays … and has been added,” the plural subject does not agree with the verbs, and the tense pattern is inconsistent. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “fabric(cloth).” Practise accurate passive constructions, which are especially useful for describing manufacturing processes, and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
