IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the whole process of formation of fabric from bamboo and then formation of clothing from it. Overall, it consists of 9 steps begining from harvesting the plant in autumn to making clothes from weaved fabrics.
There are nine steps in total. First of all, bamboo is planted in spring. After 6-7 months of growth, harvesting finally starts in autumn. Moving forward, the harvested plant is carefully cut into long vertical pieces along the fibres. Then comes an important stage of softening. Water and amine oxide are added for this purpose. Now, we have got a mixture of soft, tender bamboo strips along with the added liquid. Filteration is done to separate the these strips from the liquid.
Furthermore, these long delicate fibres are crushed and churned to produce liquid pulp. This liquid pulp is then spun to make a yarn.
Finally, this yarn is weaved into fabric which can be used to manufacture different kinds of apparels and outfits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include the planting and harvesting seasons, the use of water and amine oxide, and the final production of yarn and fabric. However, several stages are misreported or placed in the wrong order: the diagram shows the bamboo being cut and crushed into liquid pulp before filtering, then the fibres are softened; your account softens the material before filtering and says the fibres are crushed after filtering. You also omit the final step showing clothing, and the overview does not accurately summarise the full process. To strengthen the response, describe each stage in sequence and distinguish the liquid pulp from the long fibres separated during filtering.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account, with a final sentence describing the product. Sequencing expressions such as “First of all,” “Moving forward,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help guide the reader. However, the progression becomes confusing because the stages are not presented in the diagram’s order, particularly around crushing, filtering and softening. Some transitions also imply relationships that are not accurate, such as “Now, we have got” after softening. For stronger cohesion, use the diagram’s sequence as the organising principle and connect each stage with precise references, for example, “The resulting pulp is then filtered” and “the separated fibres are softened.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied range for describing a process, including “harvesting,” “separate,” “liquid pulp,” “spun,” and “manufacture.” These choices make the general topic clear, and some less common vocabulary is attempted. However, several expressions are inaccurate or awkward for this process: “formation of fabric,” “weaved fabrics,” and “delicate fibres” are not the most natural or precise choices. “Churned” also suggests vigorous mixing, which is not shown in the diagram. There are spelling and word-form slips, including “begining” and “Filteration,” as well as the nonstandard “apparels.” Aim for precise process vocabulary and check spelling: for example, use “production,” “woven fabric,” “filtering,” and “clothing.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause “Overall, it consists of…” and the passive construction “Water and amine oxide are added.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the sequence is generally expressed clearly. Some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain, however. “It consists of 9 steps begining” needs a participle or a full clause (“consists of nine steps, beginning…”), while “separate the these strips” contains an unnecessary article. In “soft, tender,” spacing after the comma is missing, and “which can be used to manufacture” has an unclear reference to what can be used. Improve control by checking articles, clause structure, punctuation and clear pronoun reference; greater accuracy across these structures would make the account more polished.
