IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram demonstrates the nine step process of how fabric is produced from bamboo.

The diagram shows us, that the process starts in spring with bamboo plantation. During august, the crop is harvested. It then undergoes a series of steps to produce yarn. The yarn is then woven into fabric, which can be used to stitch garments.

The first phase involves planting bamboo plants during the early months of the year. After summer season is over, the plants are harvested. The bamboo canes are then split into strips. After the initial steps are completed, the conversion phase starts. These strips are crushed to create liquid pulp. Fibres are then filtered out from the pulp. A mixture of water and amine oxide is added to the fibres to reduce their rigidity.

The soft fibres are then spun to make yarn balls. The yarn balls are woven to create fabric. This fabric can be used to construct a variety of items, such as shirts, socks and other items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from planting through processing to finished clothing, and the overview identifies the broad transformation into yarn and fabric. Most details match the diagram, including crushing the strips, filtering the fibres, and adding water and amine oxide. However, some points are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram specifies planting in spring and harvesting in autumn, whereas “during August” and “early months of the year” add timing not shown. The final stage is clothing, but the response presents this as fabric that “can be used” for garments rather than clearly reporting the diagram’s clothing outcome. A more complete overview could also highlight the progression from agricultural stages to mechanical and chemical processing, then textile production.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with paragraphs moving from an introduction and overview to the stages of processing and the final products. Sequencing expressions such as “The first phase,” “After the initial steps,” and “The soft fibres are then” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent overall progression. To make the organisation more flexible and precise, avoid repeating “The diagram” in the opening sentences and use clearer links between the overview and the detailed stages. The phrase “After summer season is over” is understandable but slightly interrupts the otherwise direct progression; referring explicitly to the autumn harvest would connect the timing more cleanly to the diagram.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “spun,” and “woven.” These choices communicate the stages clearly, and “reduce their rigidity” shows an attempt at more precise description. Some wording is less natural or less exact for this process: “bamboo plantation” is not the clearest way to describe planting, “split into strips” is less precise than “cut into strips,” and “yarn balls” is not the usual term for the yarn produced. “Construct a variety of items” is also somewhat formal and awkward in this context. More consistently natural collocations and exact process terms would add precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate the process clearly. Passive constructions such as “The plants are harvested” and “Fibres are then filtered out” suit a process description, while the sentence explaining that water and amine oxide are added extends the range. Some grammatical and punctuation slips remain. In “The diagram shows us, that,” the comma is unnecessary, and “After summer season is over” needs an article (“the summer season”). “During august” also requires a capital letter for the month. The opening phrase “the nine step process” would be more accurately formed as “the nine-step process.” These are minor issues that rarely affect understanding; careful proofreading would improve control.
