IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacture of fabric like clothes or socks from bamboo.
Overall, the whole process consists of nine stages beginning with the planting and harvesting of the bamboo and ending with the production of finished fabric. The raw bamboo goes through cutting, crushing, and filtering to make a thread which is woven into fabric like clothes.
First, the bamboo is planted in spring, and they are allowed to grow until they become a tree.Next, they are harvested in autumn. After that, they are cut into small strips from a large bamboo tree.Crushing is the next step in which they are crushed to make them a final liquid pulp. The next phase is filtering, in which liquid pulp separates from long fibers.
In the sixth phase, long fibers are added with water and amine oxide to make a soften fibers. These soften fibers are spun to make yarn, then the spun thread is woven into fabric which is our main product. After fabric is manufactured, many types of clothing products are produced from it like T-shirts,socks.
In conclusion, this is a linear process of the transformation of the long bamboo tree into a useful fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages and give a clear overview: the process starts with planting and harvesting and ends with fabric and clothing, while the middle stages transform bamboo into fibres and yarn. The sequence from cutting and crushing through filtering, softening, spinning and weaving is generally reported accurately. This meets the task well, and the overview shows some synthesis rather than simply listing steps. However, a few details are unclear or imprecise: the diagram says the bamboo is cut into strips, not necessarily “small” strips, and the fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide; your wording that they are “added with” these substances obscures the action. The final stage shows clothing items, so distinguish this from fabric itself to make the process description more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction and overview, a chronological account of the early stages, and a paragraph covering the later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “First,” “Next,” “After that,” and “In the sixth phase” make the process easy to follow, and the conclusion reinforces the overall transformation. This is a clear progression through the diagram. Some linking is a little mechanical because several stages are introduced with similar time markers, and the conclusion repeats the overview rather than adding a useful final point. There are also missing spaces after full stops and commas, which interrupt the visual flow. To strengthen cohesion, group related stages more smoothly and use references such as “these fibres” only where the antecedent is unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “manufacture,” “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering,” “spun,” and “woven,” which helps communicate the stages. Some less common terms are relevant, particularly “amine oxide.” However, several choices are imprecise or awkward: “they are allowed to grow until they become a tree” is not a natural description of bamboo, “make them a final liquid pulp” is unclear, and “a soften fibers” uses the wrong form. “Thread” is also less precise than “yarn” in this context. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer concise process collocations such as “crushed into pulp,” “fibres are softened,” and “woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including clauses beginning “in which” and a sequence of passive constructions such as “they are harvested” and “are spun.” These structures suit a process description, and the meaning remains clear despite some errors. There are problems with agreement and reference in “the bamboo is planted … and they are allowed to grow,” where the pronoun does not match the singular noun. The phrase “long fibers are added with water” also has an inaccurate grammatical pattern, and “to make a soften fibers” contains errors in article, word form and number. Several sentences run together because spaces are missing after punctuation. Check agreement, articles and plural forms, and punctuate each stage cleanly.
