IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrate the process of make fabric from a another organic material like bambo.

Overall , the process of converting bamboo into wearable fabric take nine steps . It start from growing bamboo in feilds and move from seven steps and at the end it convert into garments product.

Firstly, the process start from plantation of bamboo in spring season followed by harvesting process which are done into autumn season. After that it moves to processing plant for further steps necessary to convert this into fabric. Here in the plant the process start from cutting the bamboo into strips and after this these strips are mixted with water and amine oxide to soften the bamboo fibers. Here bamboo is converted into a soft fiber like material.

Next to this, the process move to filtering where liquid is separate from the bamboo long fibers followed by crushing process which convert into a liquid pulp. In addtion to this, the pupl is than move from spining process which convert the bamboo fibers into yarns which is futher used to make weave. After this it move to final step which make the garments product from this weave

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a broad overview from bamboo cultivation to clothing, which captures the diagram’s overall purpose. You also correctly mention planting in spring and harvesting in autumn, as well as the later production of yarn and fabric. However, the account does not accurately report the order of several central stages: the strips are crushed into liquid pulp before filtering, and the fibres are softened with water and amine oxide after filtering. Your response reverses these steps and says the strips are mixed with the softening agents. The final stages are also imprecise: the yarn is woven into fabric, which is then made into clothing. A clearer, accurate account of these stages would make the summary more complete and relevant.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the process. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After that,” “Next to this,” and “After this” help the reader follow the stages. However, the progression becomes difficult to track because the middle stages are presented in the wrong order, and some references are unclear, as in “this” and “it” in “it moves to processing plant” and “it move to final step.” The overview’s phrase “move from seven steps” is also confusing. Grouping the stages more clearly and using precise references—for example, naming “the pulp,” “the fibres,” and “the yarn”—would improve cohesion and make the sequence easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “filtering,” “fibers,” “yarns,” and “garments,” so the reader can generally understand the subject. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “plantation” and “processing plant.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “make weave” should describe weaving fabric, while “garments product” is not a natural phrase. Spelling errors such as “bambo,” “feilds,” “mixted,” “addtion,” and “spining” are noticeable, and “pupl” makes one stage harder to understand. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling carefully; this will make your vocabulary more precise and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sequence linked with “followed by,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns and in the longer constructions. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “the process of make fabric” needs a gerund or infinitive form. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or incorrect, as in “from a another organic material” and “moves to processing plant.” Verb forms and agreement cause further problems in “the process start” and “which are done.” These errors sometimes make relationships between stages unclear. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions and build longer sentences from correctly formed clauses, with careful attention to articles and agreement.
