IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates how production of fabric takes place. The process of obtaining fabric from bamboo is done in 9 steps.
Overall it can be seen that the procedure undergoes various stages in order to produce the final product(fabric). This includes steps like bamboo planting which takes place only in Spring season. In fact, the period of harvesting is also fixed which is autumn. The bamboo then undergoes steps such as getting cut , soften which results in production of weave.
First of all, the foundation of fabric making starts planting bamboo plants. These plants are then harvested when they are fully grown. The next step is to make thin strips out of the harvested bamboo. These sticks are later on crushed in order to make liquid pulp.
Now the liqiud is the substance which is filtered for the seperation of long fibres from it. These fibres are introduced to water as well as amine oxide in order to make them soft. The yarn is now obtained which undergoes spining and weaving which results in making of fabric. Hence fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and include the key seasonal details: planting occurs in spring and harvesting in autumn. The account also covers the main transformation from strips to pulp, fibres, yarn and fabric, so the response addresses the task and its information is generally relevant. However, the overview is not fully precise: “produce the final product (fabric)” overlooks the final clothing stage shown, and “results in production of weave” does not clearly describe the sequence. The later stages are also compressed: spinning and weaving are mentioned, but the diagram’s final step—making clothing items—is omitted. A clearer overview and more complete reporting of the end stages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression, moving from an introduction and overview to the early and later stages. Paragraphing helps separate the process, and sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “The next step,” and “Now” guide the reader through it. This coherent arrangement is a strength. Some links are less effective or repetitive, however: “The yarn is now obtained which undergoes spining and weaving” makes the relationship between spinning and the yarn unclear, while “Hence” adds little after the preceding explanation. The overview also repeats the seasonal details already introduced. To develop the organisation further, use more precise references between stages and make each paragraph’s role distinct, especially by separating the overview from the detailed sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “amine oxide,” which allows the reader to follow the main production stages. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “the foundation of fabric making.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “production of weave” does not express the intended result, “sticks” is less precise than “strips,” and “introduced to water” is awkward for describing the softening stage. Spelling errors such as “liqiud,” “seperation,” and “spining” also reduce accuracy. Prefer standard process collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make the vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily elaborate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple statements and some more complex forms, including “These sticks are later on crushed in order to make liquid pulp” and “which takes place only in Spring season.” The sequence remains understandable despite some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, “starts planting bamboo plants” needs a structure such as “starts with planting bamboo,” and “The yarn is now obtained which undergoes…” has an unclear relative clause and stage relationship. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “in Spring season” would normally be “in the spring,” and the opening overview contains a long sentence with several ideas joined together. Aim for a wider range of controlled sentence patterns, and proofread articles, clause links and punctuation so that the stages are expressed more accurately.
