IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the fabric-making process from bamboo. Overall, nine steps are followed, from planting bamboo to turning it into fabric.

In the first step, its showed the planting season; usually, springtime is preferred. In autumn, the plant is ready for harvesting. In the third stage, with a cutter, the plants are cut into strips and then run through a grinder to crush the strips into liquid pulp. In the fifth step, the liquid is put on the filter so that long fibres can be detached. Then these long fibres need to be softened by mixing with water and amine oxide.

In the last 3rd stage, the processed fibres are put on the spinning machine to make the yarn. The yarns are organized into a round ball shape for easy use. The weaver then weaves different yarns to make the fabric. Finally, using that fabric, the tailor or manufacturer put into different shapes and types of cloths.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a sequence of nine stages and cover the main transformation from planting through to fabric, with relevant details such as the spring planting, autumn harvest, filtering, and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, the overview is brief and slightly imprecise: the process ends with clothing items, not simply fabric, and this final stage is described as a tailor or manufacturer shaping cloth, which the diagram does not specify. Some stages are also unclear or inaccurately described, including saying the liquid is filtered rather than that fibres are separated from it. Make the overview more informative by grouping the agricultural, fibre-processing, and textile-making stages, and report only what the diagram shows.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall sequence and is divided into paragraphs, while time markers such as “In the first step,” “In autumn,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The order is generally easy to trace, including the transition from crushing to filtering and then softening. However, the paragraphing does not fully distinguish the stages, and some references are awkward or unclear: “In the last 3rd stage” could mean the final third of the process, while “these long fibres” depends on the previous sentence for its reference. Use clearer grouping and transitions, for example, separating cultivation and preparation from the later spinning, weaving, and clothing stages.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spinning,” and “weaves,” which makes most stages understandable. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide” and “grinder.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “the plant is ready for harvesting” is less exact than referring to the bamboo, “put on the filter” is not a natural description of filtration, and “different shapes and types of cloths” does not accurately name the finished clothing shown. “Organized into a round ball shape” is also unnecessarily wordy. Aim for precise process collocations such as “pass through a filter,” “spun into yarn,” and “made into garments.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including purpose and time clauses: “so that long fibres can be detached” and “In autumn, the plant is ready for harvesting.” Most of the sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. “In the first step, its showed” has an incorrect pronoun and verb form; “the tailor or manufacturer put” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “using that fabric, the tailor or manufacturer put into different shapes” is missing a clear object and has an incomplete construction. The phrase “the last 3rd stage” is also grammatically awkward. Check verb forms and agreement, and make sure each sentence has a complete, clearly structured clause.
