IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This diagram shows how fabric is made from the bambo plants .
Sewing time for bambo plant is spring and it harvested in autumn season. After harvesting all the strips were cut with special cutter and then crushed in fine pulp .Then filtration process is started to separate fibers from the liquid pulp .Then by adding water and amine oxide ,softning process is begin to make the liquid or pulp more soften for further processing. At the next step ,in fiber making industry is spining ,larger spinners are use to make fine yarn.
Then this yarn were crossed from waves to make proper fibers. This is the total manufacturing process of fibers .then this fibers is ready to make clothes and making all other stuffs from fiber.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the process as bamboo fabric production and report several relevant stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing, filtering, softening, and spinning. However, the account is incomplete and contains important inaccuracies: it says the yarn is “crossed from waves” rather than woven into fabric, and it does not clearly report the final step, where clothing items are made. The overview is also missing, so the reader is not given a clear summary of the process from growing bamboo to finished products. The response is 126 words, below the required 150, which further limits the coverage. To improve, describe all nine stages accurately and add a concise overview of the process’s beginning and end.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a generally understandable order, and linking expressions such as “After harvesting,” “Then,” and “At the next step” help show progression. This gives the response an overall arrangement that readers can follow. However, the repeated use of “Then” makes the connections somewhat mechanical, and the response is written as one continuous paragraph rather than being organised into a brief introduction, overview, and process details. Some references are also unclear: “this yarn” is followed by “crossed from waves,” making the next stage difficult to interpret. Use paragraphing to distinguish the overview from the details, vary sequencing language, and make each transition clearly identify the material being processed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “pulp,” “filtration,” “fibers,” and “yarn,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, including “bambo,” “softning,” “spining,” and “waves.” Phrases such as “larger spinners are use” and “all other stuffs” are also imprecise or unnatural for a process description. The vocabulary range is adequate for naming some stages, but it is not consistently controlled, and the inaccurate wording obscures key steps. Aim to use the diagram’s exact process terms, especially “weave” and “fabric,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “Then by adding water and amine oxide, softning process is begin,” and it uses some passive constructions appropriate to a manufacturing process. However, verb forms and agreement are often inaccurate: “it harvested” needs an auxiliary, “process is begin” has an incorrect verb form, and “this yarn were” does not agree. Tense use also shifts between past and present, while missing articles and inconsistent sentence punctuation make some sentences harder to read. These errors can cause difficulty, particularly in the description of the later stages. Practise accurate passive forms such as “the strips are crushed” and keep the process description consistently in the present simple.
