IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided procedure diagram explains the complete process of producing bamboo fabric with bamboo plant in 9 major steps.

Overall, it can be seen that bamboo fabric is made through complex procedure starts from harvesting the bamboo plant in Autumn and then goes through cutting, softning and filtering. By going through from all these steps, it becomes useful for making clothes.

By looking at the details, Firstly, its plantation occurs in spring and then harvest in autumn season for futher processing. According to the diagram, 3rd step is to cut the bambo into long and thin strips which then crush to make the liquid pulp. In 5th step, filteration process occurs, which means the separation of long fibers from the liquid. Furthermore, soaked in the water including amine oxide which soften the fibers.

7th step is spining of soft fibers which converts in to yam, Moreover, weave is made by this yam by hands or machinery. Now, it become fabric which can be easily converted in to any shape by stiching and shaping. Bamboo fiber is widely used to make shirts and winter socks which are highly durable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, yarn production and fabric, and your overview identifies the broad transformation into clothing. This meets the task well, with relevant details such as separating long fibres from liquid and adding water and amine oxide. Some points, however, are less fully or accurately reported: the diagram shows the final clothing items but does not say they are “highly durable,” nor does it specify that weaving is done by hand or machinery or that fabric is converted by stitching and shaping. The overview also omits the final spinning, weaving and clothing stages. To strengthen the response, summarise the full sequence accurately and avoid adding unsupported claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” help connect later steps. However, progression is not consistently smooth: the overview jumps from harvesting to cutting, softening and filtering, while the detailed account later returns to planting. Some linking phrases feel mechanical, and “By going through from all these steps” does not clearly connect the process to its result. The final paragraph also combines spinning, weaving and clothing in a way that blurs the distinction between the diagram’s stages. Group the stages in their actual order and use clear references such as “the next stage” to make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “separation,” “fibers,” “pulp” and “spinning,” and the reader can generally understand the production stages. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “long and thin strips.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “softning,” “futher,” “bambo,” “filteration,” “spining,” “yam” and “stiching.” Some collocations are awkward, including “plantation occurs” and “weave is made by this yam.” Prefer standard process terms and check spelling carefully; “yarn” is especially important because it names a key product in the diagram. More accurate, natural phrasing would make the description clearer and more flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex forms, for example, “which then crush to make the liquid pulp” and “which means the separation of long fibers from the liquid.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, sentence construction and agreement. For instance, “complex procedure starts” needs an article and a clearer verb pattern, while “which then crush” lacks a passive form; “Furthermore, soaked in the water…” is a sentence fragment, and “it become fabric” has incorrect agreement. Punctuation also needs attention, particularly the comma splice in “yam, Moreover.” Build accuracy by using consistent passive forms for process steps (“is crushed,” “is filtered”) and checking that each sentence has a complete subject and verb.
