IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagrams below demonstrate the manufacturing process of frabic from bamboo.

Overall, it is a nine-stage, linear process, which begins with bamboo being grown and ends with fabric clothes being created.

The process begins when bamboo plants are planted, usually in the spring because of its nature. After, autum they are harvestes and converted into small strips. Those strips are then crushed and converted into liquid pulp, which is then filtered inorder to separate the long fibers from the liquid.

In the following step, the separated fibers are soften using water and amine oxide, after which the remained product known as yarn is formed. After which the yarn is spinned into balls for easier use. Finally, the end product to manufacture clothes is formed known as weave. And clothes are manufactured.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a relevant overview, from growing bamboo to producing clothing. Several key stages are also included, such as crushing the strips, filtering the pulp, and softening the fibres with water and amine oxide. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows yarn being made by spinning the softened fibres, then woven into fabric, whereas your account says yarn is formed before it is spun and describes weaving as the end product rather than a stage before clothing. The seasonal detail is also muddled. The response is 20 words below the required minimum, which limits how fully you can report the stages. Add a clearer account of the final steps and check each stage against the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an overview is followed by the early processing stages and then the later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “The process begins,” “In the following step,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. However, the progression becomes less clear near the end, where “After which” is repeated and the order of spinning, weaving, and making clothes is confused. Some links are also awkward, as in “After, autum they are harvestes,” and the sentence beginning “And clothes are manufactured” feels detached from the preceding explanation. Use one paragraph for the overview and a more complete, carefully ordered description of the stages, with clear references to what each pronoun refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” and “fibers,” so the reader can understand much of the manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more specific terminology, such as “amine oxide.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “frabic,” “autum,” “harvestes,” “inorder,” and “spinned” reduce accuracy. Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, particularly “the remained product known as yarn” and “the end product to manufacture clothes is formed known as weave.” Use the diagram’s terms precisely—for example, fibres are spun into yarn, and yarn is woven into fabric—while checking spelling and choosing natural process collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which begins with bamboo being grown” and a sequence of linked clauses describing the pulp. The main stages are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors make parts of the account difficult to follow. For example, “After, autum they are harvestes” has faulty sentence construction, and “the separated fibers are soften” uses an incorrect verb form. The phrase “after which the remained product … is formed” also has an unclear structure, while “And clothes are manufactured” is an awkward fragment-like continuation. Improve control of past participles and passive forms, and punctuate transitions carefully. A clearer model is: “The fibres are softened, then spun into yarn, which is woven into fabric.”
