IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The assigned process represenation illustrates the method of manufacturing bamboo fabric.

Having cast a fleeting glance,it is abundatly clear that in the ab initio step, bamboo plants are planted in spring season. After planting bamboo trees, these are to harvested in autumn season.Having harvested these are to be cut into strips. Before crushing strips to make liquid pulp, these have to be filter and seperate long fibres from liquid. Once filteration is done, add water and amine oxide to soften fibre. Later that, spin is made to produce yarn.Unless weaving is not done, these cannot be sent to factories for making clothes, socks and soon.

To sum up,it is lucid that all the steps are vital for making fabric from bamboo plants. If any step is mised, the whole process would halt.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as bamboo-fabric production and include several relevant stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, softening the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving. However, the account is incomplete and partly misorders the stages: filtering is described before crushing, whereas the diagram shows the strips being crushed into pulp first, then filtered, and only then softened. The final step is also not clearly reported as the production of clothing items. The overview is limited to saying that every step is vital, rather than summarising the process from cultivation through to finished products. The response also falls short of the required 150 words, leaving important stages and details underdeveloped. A fuller, accurately sequenced account would address the task more completely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic chronological framework, and sequencing expressions such as “After planting,” “Before crushing,” and “Later” show an attempt to guide the reader through the process. The opening and concluding sentences also give the response a recognisable beginning and ending. However, the progression becomes confusing because filtering is placed before crushing, and the long central passage combines many stages without clear paragraphing or consistently precise links. “To sum up” introduces a general comment rather than a concise overview of the process. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and a clearly sequenced description of the stages; use linking phrases that reflect the diagram’s actual order.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “weaving,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “abundatly clear” and “lucid,” but these sound unnatural in this context and do not improve precision. Noticeable spelling and word-form errors include “represenation,” “seperate,” “filteration,” and “mised.” Phrases such as “spin is made” and “and soon” are also imprecise or incorrectly chosen. Aim for accurate, natural process language—for example, “the fibres are spun into yarn”—and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some complex structures, including “Before crushing strips to make liquid pulp…” and “Unless weaving is not done…,” but these constructions are often faulty or unclear. Errors include “these are to harvested,” which needs a passive form such as “these are harvested,” and “these have to be filter,” which requires “filtered.” The sentence beginning “Having harvested these…” also lacks a clear grammatical subject. The negative construction “Unless weaving is not done” is confusing, and several sentences run together without appropriate spacing after punctuation. These errors sometimes make the sequence difficult to follow. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and use shorter, controlled sentences before adding more complex clauses.
