IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates a linear process of how fabric is created using bamboo.
At a glance, it is clearly evident that the creation of farbic involves 9 crucial steps which begins with growing bamboo plants and ends at the making of different clothing.
To begin with, it can be seen that the process starts after the bamboo plant has been grown out. The second step involves the official harvest of bamboo plants in the autumn season and it is cut into strips using a blade afterwards. The cut strips are then crushed to get the liquid pulp out of them which is then filtered to seperate long fibres from the liquid.
In addition, the next step involves adding water and amine oxide which helps in softening fibers. Furthermore, the fiber is spinned to produce yarn balls so they can be weaved later on. The second last step involves weaving of yarn to make fabric and the this fabric is utilised to make diferrent clothing like sweaters and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence accurately, from planting and autumn harvesting through cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. The overview also identifies the nine stages and the transformation from bamboo to clothing, which gives the response a clear account of the process. This is close to a fuller, more developed report, but some details are less complete: the final stage is described as making clothing, although the diagram explicitly shows finished garments, and the planting stage could mention spring. The phrase “after the bamboo plant has been grown out” is also unclear about the initial growing stage. Include these details and make the overview more precise to strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs that follow the process in sequence. Linking phrases such as “To begin with,” “In addition” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader, and the description moves logically through the stages. The middle stages are grouped sensibly, so the reader can follow the transformation from strips to fibres and then yarn. Some connections are slightly mechanical, however, and the final sentence combines weaving and clothing production without clearly marking the diagram’s last stage. Use more precise transitions and separate the final garment stage from fabric production to make the progression even clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “softening” and “weaving.” These terms communicate the main stages, and “linear process” is an appropriate description. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “grown out” is unclear, “official harvest” is unnatural, and “yarn balls” is less accurate than simply referring to yarn. There are also spelling errors in “farbic,” “seperate” and “diferrent,” alongside the incorrect forms “spinned” and “weaved.” Aim for accurate process terminology and proofread spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more controlled and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is then filtered” and a purpose clause in “so they can be weaved later on.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. In the overview, “9 crucial steps which begins” has a plural subject with a singular verb; write “nine crucial steps, which begin.” The phrase “it is cut into strips” also has an unclear reference, and “the this fabric” contains an article error. The passive forms “is spinned” and “can be weaved” are also incorrect. Check agreement, pronoun reference, articles and past participles while retaining your varied sentence structures.
