IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the stages involved in the making of fabric. Overall the process consists of nine steps, begining with planting to harvesting of bamboo and ending with the making of weave that is later used in making clothes.
Initially, the babmoo plants are cultivated in spring season and when comes the autums it is harvested using sickle. Then the bamboo is cut into strips and is crushed to make liquid pulps. Once this has been completed, the fibers in the liquid is filtered out and moves to the next step where water and a special chemical i.e amine oxide is added to soften the fibers.
Subsequently, the material them moved to a most significant stage where it undergoes a process called spinning. This is the moment when the fibers originated from the babmoo are converted to yarn. Then is yarn is more processed according to the needs. This results in the formation of weaves that plays a very pivot role in making clothes. Finally, the finished product is clothes of different types for example, t-shirts, socks etc

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the main sequence and gives a clear overview: it identifies nine steps, the seasonal planting and harvesting, and the final production of clothing. Most stages are reported accurately, including crushing the strips into pulp, filtering the fibres, softening them with water and amine oxide, spinning yarn, and weaving fabric. This strong coverage is close to a fuller account, but a few details are less precise or underdeveloped. For example, the diagram shows the fabric being woven before the finished garments, whereas “weaves” is described as playing a role in making clothes without clearly distinguishing fabric from clothing. The overview could also summarise the transition from raw bamboo to finished products more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence, moving from an overview to the early processing stages and then to spinning, weaving, and the final products. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Once this has been completed,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The paragraphing is also appropriate for a process description. Some links are less smooth, however: “Then is yarn is more processed” is difficult to follow, and “This results in the formation of weaves” does not clearly connect the weaving stage to the finished fabric. Use more precise references to each material as it changes, such as “the softened fibres,” “the yarn,” and “the fabric,” to make progression consistently clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “cultivated,” “filtered,” “soften,” “spinning,” and “converted to yarn.” These choices help describe the stages, and the meaning is generally clear. The response also attempts more specific language, such as “amine oxide” and “sickle,” though some wording is inaccurate or unnatural. “Making of weave” and “formation of weaves” are not natural ways to describe the product; “weaving fabric” would be clearer. There are also spelling errors, including “babmoo,” “begining,” and “autums,” and “pivot role” is an unsuitable collocation. More accurate process terms and careful proofreading would improve precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a time clause (“when comes the autums”) and a relative clause (“that plays a very pivot role”). The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships between stages unclear. Examples include “when comes the autums,” which needs a complete clause such as “when autumn comes,” and “the fibers in the liquid is filtered out,” where the plural subject requires “are.” “Then is yarn is more processed” also has an incorrect sentence structure, while “the material them moved” lacks a correctly formed verb. Check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation and spacing.
