IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the production of bamboo fabric includes several stages, begining with the harvesting and processing ending with the production of finished fabric. This process involves both mechanical and chemical treatments to transform the plan bamboo into the fabric.
Firstly, a plant bamboo is harvested and cut into small pieces. Then, these are crushed to make a liquid pulp to produce bamboo fibres. After this, the fibres are soaked with water and chemical to separate them from liquid. Then, these are separated forming the liquid.
Furthermore, they are washed and dried to get into yarn. Finally, the yarn is weave to make fabric which can subsequenlty be used to make clothes and other textile products.
Overall, the process is quite complex with different process along with a mix of both mechanical and chemical transfromation procedures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence that turns bamboo into fabric and mention several relevant stages, including crushing the strips into pulp, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. However, the account is only partial and contains important inaccuracies: the diagram shows planting in spring before harvesting in autumn, while your overview says the process begins with harvesting. The filtering stage is also confused with softening: fibres are filtered from the liquid first, then softened using water and amine oxide. Washing and drying are not shown. The overview repeats a general comment about complexity rather than clearly summarising the main stages. The response is also six words below the required minimum. Include the planting stage and describe each stage in the correct order to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview and a description of the process, with sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Then,” “After this” and “Finally.” This makes the general direction of the process understandable. However, the progression becomes unclear where you write, “these are soaked with water and chemical to separate them from liquid” and then “these are separated forming the liquid”; the references do not clearly distinguish fibres from liquid, and the stages are presented in the wrong order. The final paragraph beginning “Overall” repeats the overview rather than adding a new stage or useful summary. Use one clear paragraph for the overview and group the stages in sequence, with precise references to the material at each point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “manufacturing process,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn” and “chemical treatments,” which helps communicate the topic. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “transform” and “subsequently.” However, several word-choice and form errors reduce precision: “plan bamboo” should be “plant bamboo” or “raw bamboo,” “chemical” needs a more suitable plural or specific term, and “the yarn is weave” should be “the yarn is woven.” “Washed and dried” is not supported by the diagram, so accurate vocabulary must also reflect the visual information. Spelling errors such as “begining,” “subsequenlty” and “transfromation” are noticeable. Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “Overall, the production … includes several stages” and the final clause explaining that fabric can be used to make clothes. The sequence is generally expressed in a readable way, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “includes several stages, begining with the harvesting and processing ending” has an incomplete or poorly connected participial structure; “a plant bamboo” has incorrect article and noun construction; and “the yarn is weave” has an incorrect passive verb form. There are also missing articles or plural forms in “with water and chemical.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the broad topic, but they make several sentences awkward. Practise accurate passive forms and use clear sentence structures when describing each stage.
