IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates the nine phases to and moproduce fabric from bambo plants .
overall , there’s nine stages to obtain fabric , firstly we need to plant bambo plants during spring , harvest it in autumn , after that we cut it into strips before crushing them to make liquid pulp , moreover we need to filter the liquid to isolate it from the ling fibers, we take those fibers and we add water and amine oxide to soften them , then when we have a lot of soft fibers we spin them to make a yam , and finally the wave it to obtain fabric from bambo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and include several key steps in the correct order, from planting in spring and harvesting in autumn to spinning yarn and weaving fabric. You also mention crushing, filtering, and softening the fibres, so the response is relevant and conveys the general process. However, the account is only partial: it does not report the final stage shown, where the fabric is made into clothing, and the overview is combined with a long list rather than clearly summarising the process’s main phases. The response is also 41 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail you can provide. Describe all stages and add a fuller overview to address the task more completely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The stages are mostly presented in the correct sequence, and linking expressions such as “after that,” “before,” “moreover,” and “finally” help show how one step follows another. However, nearly the entire response is written as one extended sentence, so the progression is difficult to follow and the overview is not clearly separated from the process details. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “we need to filter the liquid to isolate it from the ling fibers,” which makes the relationship between the liquid and fibres hard to understand. Organise the response into a brief introduction and overview followed by a clearly punctuated description of the stages, using fewer, more precise connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” “soften,” and “spin,” which allows the reader to recognise many of the steps. However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors make parts difficult to interpret: “bambo” appears repeatedly, “yam” seems intended to mean “yarn,” and “wave” is used where “weave” is needed. The phrase “isolate it from the ling fibers” is also unclear and does not accurately express separating long fibres from the liquid. Check spelling carefully and use precise process terms, such as “separate the long fibres from the liquid” and “weave the yarn into fabric,” to make the description clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect several stages using clauses, for example, “after that we cut it into strips before crushing them,” but it relies on one long sentence and shows limited control of sentence boundaries and punctuation. The opening, “The diagram illustrates the nine phases to and moproduce,” is grammatically incomplete, while “there’s nine stages” has a subject–verb agreement error. Pronouns and references are also inconsistent: “bamboo plants” is followed by “harvest it,” then “crushing them,” without a consistently clear referent. These frequent errors can make the sequence harder to follow. Use separate, complete sentences, check agreement and pronoun reference, and practise accurate clauses for describing stages in a process.
