IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This diagram shows the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. Initially, the bamboo plant is planted in the springs and it is harvested by the farmers in autumn. The bamboo plant is cut into strips and then softened by the addition of water and amine oxide. Moving forward, the softened fibres are filtered to seperate the long fibres from liquid. Crushing strips is the main process in manufacturing of fabric. The crushing of strips results in the formation of liquid pulp. The formed product is also known as thread and this thread is spinned to make a yarn. This yarn is weaved to make fabric by the help of needles. In past, people used needles for weaving but now machinery and tools complete this task within seconds. This weave is transported to the textile industries and the clothes are manufactured. The clothes are sent to the marketplace and brands for retailing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the topic and report several genuine stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, cutting, crushing, filtering, spinning and weaving. However, the account does not accurately preserve the process sequence: the fibres are filtered and softened only after the strips are crushed, whereas you place softening before crushing and filtering before crushing. You also introduce unsupported details, such as the material becoming “thread” before spinning, weaving with needles, modern machinery, transport to textile industries, and retailing. The diagram’s final stage is simply finished clothing. There is no clear overview of the process as a whole. To improve, summarise the main progression from seasonal cultivation through fibre processing to finished garments, and avoid adding information not shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a generally understandable chronological framework, and transitions such as “Initially,” “Moving forward,” and “This yarn” help connect some stages. However, the progression becomes confusing when the order of processing is misreported, and the paragraph shifts from the diagram to unsupported claims about past and present weaving, transport, and retail. The sentence “Crushing strips is the main process” interrupts the sequence rather than explaining how the stages relate. Cohesive devices are also somewhat mechanical, and there is no distinct overview to guide the reader. Organise the account in the diagram’s exact order, group the stages into cultivation, fibre processing, and fabric/clothing production, and use transitions only where they clarify those relationships.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “weaving,” so the subject is usually clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “the addition of water and amine oxide.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “planted in the springs” should refer to planting in spring, “spinned” is not the correct form of “spin,” and “weaved” is less suitable here than “woven.” “This weave” is also unclear for the resulting fabric. The spelling “seperate” is incorrect. Use precise process terms consistently and check irregular verb forms and spelling; avoid adding vocabulary about retail or machinery that the diagram does not support.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including passive constructions such as “it is harvested” and “is cut into strips,” which suit a process description. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical inaccuracies occur. For example, “the bamboo plant is planted in the springs” has an incorrect article/number pattern, while “the formed product is also known as thread and this thread is spinned” joins ideas awkwardly and contains an incorrect verb form. “In past” is missing an article, and “the clothes are sent to the marketplace and brands” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the destinations. Aim for accurate passive forms and clearer sentence boundaries, and vary sentence structures without making the sequence harder to follow.
