IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram shows production of fabric from bamboo. Overall, there are total 9 steps involved in three different stages, from harvesting to filtering and finally manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
At the beginning, planting of bamboo plants takes place in the spring season and then the farmer harvest it in autumn. Using the cutter it will crush into strips and its liquid pulp is made. In the next stage, pulp will get pass through a filter. Using this filter, long fibres seperates out from these pulp and after adding water and amine oxide, fibres gets soften.
In the final stage, soften fibres gets spin to make yam and finally after weaving fabric is made. Using fabric, clothes are made and ready to deliver it to people. This way the whole manufacturing of fabric takes place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include the seasonal planting and harvesting, the conversion of bamboo into pulp and fibres, and the final production of fabric and clothing. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it describes “three different stages” as harvesting, filtering and manufacturing, rather than summarising the full progression from growing bamboo to finished products. There is also a factual error in saying a cutter crushes the bamboo into strips; the diagram shows it is cut into strips first, then crushed to make pulp. The final clothing stage is correctly inferred from the illustration, but the response is under the required 150 words, limiting the detail provided. A fuller overview and more precise reporting of the order would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, with an introduction and overview followed by paragraphs describing the early processing and final stages. Time and sequence markers such as “At the beginning,” “In the next stage,” and “In the final stage” help the reader follow the process. This organisation is effective, though the overview’s division into “three different stages” is not clearly carried through in the body, and some links between steps are compressed—for example, cutting, crushing and making pulp are presented in one sentence. To make progression more precise, group the stages consistently and use explicit links to show how each material changes from strips to pulp, fibres, yarn and fabric.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibres,” “weaving” and “manufacturing,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate: “cutter” is less precise than “saw,” “yam” appears to be a misspelling of “yarn,” and “seperates” is misspelled. Phrases such as “fabric is made” and “clothes are made” are also repetitive and general. Aim for more precise process language, such as “the bamboo is cut into strips,” “the pulp is filtered,” and “the fibres are spun into yarn.” These improvements would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sequence joined with “and then” and a clause beginning “Using this filter.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement and passive constructions are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “the farmer harvest it” should be “the farmer harvests it,” while “fibres gets soften” needs a plural subject and a correct passive form: “the fibres are softened.” Similarly, “soften fibres gets spin” should be “the softened fibres are spun.” The sentence “Using the cutter it will crush into strips” also lacks a clear grammatical subject. Practise accurate passive structures, which are especially useful for describing manufacturing processes, and check agreement in each clause.
