IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The schematic diagram illustrates the procedure of formation of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the bamboo fabric manufacturing process undergone series of steps. It mainly involves plantation and harvesting of bamboo to cutting and crushing of strips. Then the filteration process separte the fibres and soften them to make yarn, used to make variety of clothes.
In spring, farmers intiate the plantations of bamboo plant . After a certain time of riping, harvestation process started. Then, it undergone segmentation process to cut it into small strips. These strips are then crushed to make liquid pupl.
In filteration process, liquid pour in to filter to separate the lengthy fibres from it. Then these fibres are dissolved in solution of water and amine oxide to make it soft. Subsequently, after the softening process fibres are spinned to make yarn. These yarn are then weave to make fabrics. In the end, variety of clothing can be made through it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing the fibres into yarn and fabric, and your overview identifies the broad progression from growing bamboo to making clothing. The details about filtering out long fibres and softening them with water and amine oxide are also accurate. This gives the report a clear account of the process, although some stages are described less precisely: for example, “after a certain time of riping” does not specify the diagram’s autumn harvest, and the final clothing stage could be stated more directly as the production of garments. To strengthen the overview, distinguish the agricultural stages from the later manufacturing stages and summarise the complete sequence more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a sensible paragraph structure: an introduction and overview are followed by the early stages and then the later processing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Then,” “Subsequently,” and “In the end” help the reader follow the process. However, the repeated use of “Then” makes some links mechanical, and the overview’s sequence—“plantation and harvesting … to cutting and crushing”—does not clearly preview the later stages. Some references are also less clear, such as “through it” at the end. Use a wider range of linking expressions and make each reference explicit, while keeping the stages in a consistently clear order.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “fibres,” “filter,” and “yarn,” and several less common terms show an attempt to describe the diagram precisely. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable: “filteration,” “separte,” “pupl,” “intiate,” and “spinned” reduce the polish of the report. Phrases such as “procedure of formation” and “segmentation process” are also less natural than standard process descriptions. Aim for accurate, conventional wording rather than overly formal substitutes; this will make the stages easier to understand and demonstrate more reliable control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including “These strips are then crushed to make liquid pupl” and a sentence describing the fibres being softened before spinning. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “the bamboo fabric manufacturing process undergone series of steps” needs a correctly formed verb and article, while “These yarn are then weave” has problems with both agreement and passive verb form. “In spring, farmers intiate the plantations of bamboo plant” also shows difficulty with articles and number. Practise accurate passive constructions, which are especially useful for describing processes, and check each sentence for subject–verb agreement and complete verb phrases.
