IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There are many plants which are useful for us in our daily lives for example, bamboo. it is used for various purposes in today's world for human beings. how bamboo fabric is made? it can be made in eight easy steps.
In the first step an individual should grow a number of bamboo plants in a partuicular area or a piece of land which is owned by a him/her or get a land on lease. when bamboo plants are fully grown then the harvesting of the bamboo plants is conducted. after harvesting the bamboo sticks it gets cuts down into different strips then the strips get crushed down to make a liquid pulp which is cnsumed by individuals and contains healthy ingridients and get separated from the long fibres. after the process of separation, the soften fibers are soaked with water and amine oxide to convert them into a spin round ball like shaped structure. that spin is going to make a yarn. then the process of weaving takes place, after weaving it become a fabric. now, it can be used to make clothes for the ultimate consumers for our society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the broad sequence from growing and harvesting bamboo through processing it into fabric and clothing, so the reader can recognise the process being described. However, coverage is incomplete and several details are inaccurate or invented. The diagram shows nine stages, but the response says there are “eight easy steps” and does not clearly report the final stage of making clothing. It also incorrectly says the pulp is “consumed by individuals” and describes the fibres as being soaked to form a ball, whereas the diagram shows fibres softened with water and amine oxide, then spun into yarn. There is no concise overview of the main phases. To improve, report the stages accurately, include the finished garments, and summarise the process as cultivation, fibre processing, and fabric production.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a broadly chronological order, using markers such as “In the first step,” “after harvesting,” “after the process of separation,” and “then.” This gives the reader some sense of progression through the process. However, most information is placed in one long paragraph, and the extended sentence beginning “after harvesting the bamboo sticks” combines several distinct stages, making the sequence difficult to follow. Some links are also unclear, particularly “that spin is going to make a yarn,” which does not clearly connect the softening stage to spinning. Organise the answer into a short introduction and overview followed by clearly grouped stages, and use precise transitions to distinguish crushing, filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “amine oxide,” “yarn,” and “weaving.” These terms help communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a manufacturing diagram. “Consumed by individuals” wrongly suggests the pulp is food, while “spin round ball like shaped structure” is an imprecise description of yarn. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “partuicular,” “cnsumed,” and “ingridients,” and repeated use of “bamboo plants” and “process.” Use concise technical wording such as “the pulp is filtered,” “the fibres are softened,” and “the fibres are spun into yarn,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and subordinate clauses, for example, “when bamboo plants are fully grown then the harvesting … is conducted.” However, these structures are often faulty or difficult to control, and many sentences contain errors in tense, agreement, articles, or punctuation. Examples include “the bamboo sticks it gets cuts down,” “after weaving it become a fabric,” and the question-like opening “how bamboo fabric is made?” Capitalisation is also inconsistent, with several sentences beginning with lowercase letters. These errors sometimes make relationships between stages unclear. Aim for shorter, complete sentences with a consistent present simple passive, such as “The bamboo is harvested and cut into strips,” and check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
