IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The figure shows how fabric is prepared from a plant called bamboo, that florishes in the season of Spring, but the harvestating process is carried out in Autumn.

The Bamboo sticks are then cut into stips by passing them through a disc with multiple sharp blades. It makes the strips smaller and easier for it next step. In next step the previously made short strips are transformed to liquid pulp by crushing the strips and filtered to separate long fibres from liquid. Fibres are softened by adding them to a mixture of water and amine oxide. These chemicals help breakdown the structure and toughness of material, making a softer product. Softened fibers are spinned on a ball of cardboard to make yarn, which is then knitted to tranform it into fabric. It is then used to make clothes, socks, bedsheets, and given various shapes, used for various purposes.

How interesting the natue is, and how beautifully it can be shaped and used for our benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing the bamboo into fibres, yarn and fabric, and you include the water and amine oxide used to soften the fibres. However, the account only partially fulfils the task because it lacks a clear overview of the process as a whole and does not consistently report the final stages accurately. The diagram shows the yarn being spun, the fabric being woven, and finished clothing items; your claim that the fabric is knitted and also made into bedsheets is not supported by the visual. The closing comment about nature is not relevant to summarising the diagram. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview and describe only the stages and outcomes shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are generally presented in a sensible sequence, and phrases such as “In next step” and “which is then” help connect the processing stages. The paragraph also moves from cultivation to manufacture and use, so the reader can follow the broad progression. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, and the final personal comment interrupts the process description rather than completing it. Some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “It makes the strips smaller and easier for it next step,” where the reference of “it” is difficult to follow. Organise the response into a brief introduction and overview followed by logically grouped stages, and use clear references to each material as it changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushing,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “yarn,” which allows the reader to understand much of the manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “disc with multiple sharp blades.” However, noticeable spelling and word-form errors—“florishes,” “harvestating,” “stips,” “spinned,” and “tranform”—reduce accuracy. Some choices are also imprecise for the diagram: “knitted” should be “woven,” while “chemicals” is less exact than “water and amine oxide” or “solution.” Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling and collocations carefully; this will make the description more precise without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, for example, “Fibres are softened by adding them to a mixture of water and amine oxide.” This shows some range, and the sequence remains understandable overall. However, some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. “It makes the strips smaller and easier for it next step” has an unclear pronoun and an incomplete construction; “In next step” is missing an article, and “Softened fibers are spinned” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “It is then used” also has an unclear subject, and there is no space after the full stop in “fabric.It.” Use complete, clearly linked sentences, check articles and verb forms, and make sure pronouns refer unambiguously to the material being described.
