IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrats the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo involves nine stages, beiginning with planting bamboo in spring and ending with the producation of clothing from the finished fabric.
Initially, bamboo is planted in spring and harvested in autumn, After harvesting, the bamboo is cut into strips and then crushed to produced liquid pulp. This pulp is subsequently the long fibres from the liquid.
In the next stage, water and amine oxide are added to the spareted fibers to soften them. The softened fibres are then spun into yarn, which is collected for the next stage of production. Following this, the yarn is woven to create fabric. Once the weavring process is complete, the resulting material becomes finished fabric. Finally, this fabric is used to manufacture various items of clothing include T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear start and end point, including planting in spring and clothing as the final product. However, the account is incomplete in a key place: “This pulp is subsequently the long fibres from the liquid” does not explain that the pulp is filtered to separate the long fibres. The description also adds that yarn is “collected,” which is not shown, and says the material becomes finished fabric before clothing is made, although the diagram shows weaving followed by clothing items. The response is 143 words, below the required 150. Develop the filtering and final stages accurately and include a little more relevant detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “In the next stage,” “Following this,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The main weakness is that the transition through filtering is unclear: “This pulp is subsequently the long fibres from the liquid” leaves the relationship between the pulp and fibres difficult to follow. The ending also repeats the idea of finished fabric before describing clothing. Clarify the links between stages and avoid repeating the outcome; this would make the progression more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spun,” and “woven,” which gives the description an appropriate technical focus. There is some variation in how stages are introduced. However, several spelling and word-form errors are noticeable, including “illustrats,” “beiginning,” “producation,” “spareted,” and “weavring.” Some phrasing is also imprecise: “the pulp is subsequently the long fibres” does not express the filtering action, while “clothing include” is not a natural way to introduce examples. Choose precise process verbs such as “filtered” and “separated,” and proofread spelling and forms to make the meaning consistently clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “beginning with planting bamboo in spring and ending with…” and the relative clause “which is collected for the next stage.” Most stages are presented in a logical sequence, and the meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “Crushed to produced liquid pulp” uses the wrong verb form, and “the pulp is subsequently the long fibres” lacks a suitable verb construction. In the final sentence, “items of clothing include T-shirts and socks” needs a grammatical structure such as “including T-shirts and socks.” There is also a punctuation error where a comma follows “autumn” instead of a full stop. Check verb patterns and sentence boundaries carefully.
