IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the proportion of how fabric is manufactured from bamboo in different steps.
According to the diagram, first the bamboo plant plough in the Spring season and aften the season it, then harvest in Autumn season, after harvesting, the bamboo plant cut into strips and then Crushed the strips to make liquid pulp. The next step in this phase is filteration, in this process, the crush strips filtered to separate long fibres from liquid.
Then water and armine oxide is added which soften the fibres, then the process is teken which is called spin which is used to make yarn, then it is weave to make the fabric for use.
In conclusion, the production of fabric from bamboo plant takes several steps from planting, crush, filter, to spin and then finally weave and the fabric become ready. This process takes a lot of time in production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the general subject and report several central stages, including planting, harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account is incomplete: it omits the final stage, where the fabric is made into clothing, and the overview does not clearly summarise the process from cultivation through to finished products. Some details are inaccurate or unclear, such as “the bamboo plant plough” and the claim that the process “takes a lot of time,” which the diagram does not establish. The response is also two words below the required minimum. To strengthen the report, describe all nine stages accurately and give a concise overview grounded in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are mostly presented in their correct sequence, and the use of “first,” “then,” and “after” helps the reader follow the process. The response also separates the description from a concluding paragraph. However, the long first paragraph contains several stages joined in a chain, making the progression feel crowded; the repeated use of “then” is somewhat mechanical. The conclusion repeats earlier steps rather than adding a clear overview, and “In conclusion” is less suitable than an overview statement for this kind of report. Organise the process into clearer phases—for example, cultivation and preparation, fibre treatment, and production of fabric and clothing—and use varied, precise links between them.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “weave,” which helps communicate the main stages. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, word-form, and spelling problems reduce precision: “proportion” does not describe a process, “filteration” is not the correct form, and “armine oxide” misspells the chemical name shown in the diagram. Phrases such as “the process is teken which is called spin” are difficult to understand, while “fabric for use” is vague. Aim for accurate process verbs and natural collocations, such as “the fibres are softened” and “the yarn is woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect stages in longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and passive constructions. For example, “the bamboo plant plough” lacks a correct verb form, “the bamboo plant cut into strips” needs a passive construction, and “water and armine oxide is added” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “According to the diagram” also contains unclear tense and clause structure. Practise describing processes consistently in the present simple passive: “The bamboo is cut into strips,” followed by “The strips are crushed.” Shorter, controlled sentences will improve accuracy.
