IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The image illustrates the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo, the stage involves nine states and its linear from plantation of bamboo plant to final stage that involves clothes like tshirt and socks made from fabric.
The stage starts when the land is prepared tha bamboo is planted in spring season after a certain period of time the haversting of bamboo is done at autumn season, after haversting they are cut into strips in the third stage and the strips are crushed inorder to make the liquid pulp. After the crushing has been done filtration is done inorder to separate the fibres from the liquid, the fibres then undergo softening by addition of water and amine oxide, later the fibres are spinned inorder to make yarn out of it. After the spinning process weaving is done to make fabric whereby the fabric is used to make clothes like tshirst and socks to be worn.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from planting in spring and harvesting in autumn through processing, spinning and weaving, and you identify the finished clothing as the end product. This gives a relevant account of the process. However, the overview is embedded in the opening sentence rather than clearly separated, and some details are not supported by the diagram: for example, “the land is prepared” is not shown. The final step is described as fabric being used to make clothes, whereas the diagram simply depicts clothing after weaving. To strengthen the response, state the overall progression clearly, avoid adding unshown stages, and report the diagram’s final products without implying an extra manufacturing step.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The process is presented in a generally logical sequence, and time and sequence markers such as “after,” “then,” and “later” help the reader follow the stages. The response also moves from planting to the finished products without losing the overall direction. However, it is written as one long paragraph, and several stages are joined into extended sentences, making the progression less easy to scan. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “after” and “inorder to.” Organise the response into a brief introduction and overview followed by a clearly sequenced process paragraph. Use a wider range of transitions and punctuation to distinguish each stage.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” “spinning,” and “weaving,” so the reader can understand the main operations. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or awkward: “nine states” should be “nine stages,” “spinned” is not the correct form, and “tshirst” is misspelled. “The stage” is also repeated where “process” or “step” would be more natural. Improve precision by checking spelling and using standard process collocations, such as “the fibres are spun into yarn” and “the fabric is made into clothing.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including time clauses such as “when the land is prepared” and sequencing clauses such as “After the crushing has been done.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make the sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the stage involves nine states and its linear” has faulty sentence construction, while “the fibres then undergo softening by addition” lacks a natural article pattern. The long sentences also need clearer punctuation to separate clauses. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the bamboo is planted” and “the strips are crushed,” and divide the sequence into shorter, controlled sentences.
