IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagramatic representation illustrates the step-by-step process of manufacturing fabric from a bamboo.

Considering from an overall perspective, it can be observed that the process pertains of nine different stages, which commences with plantation of bamboo seedlings in the spring season and culminates with manufacturing of cloths from a fabric.

To begin with, plantation of bamboo is the initial step of this procedure. Thereafter, the subsequent step of this process is harvesting, where the bamboos are chop down manually in autumn. In the third step, the bamboos are cut down into strips with the help of cutter, then in the following step the strips are crused to make liquid pulp.

Furthermore, the liquid pulp is filtured with the help of funnel, where the long fibers are separated from liquid. In the sixth step, by the addition of water and amine oxide soft fiber is produced. Thereafter the soft fiber is utilized to make yarn with the help of spining. In the subsequent step, yarn is used to make a fabric by weaving process. Finally, the cloths are manufactured and are ready to sell into the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence and give a clear overview that the process has nine stages, beginning with spring planting and ending with finished clothing. Most details match the diagram, including autumn harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, spinning, and weaving. However, the final stage is described as clothes being “ready to sell into the market,” which is not shown; the diagram only depicts finished clothing. Some stages are also less fully explained: for example, the planting stage could mention bamboo plants rather than seedlings, and the filtering stage could be linked more clearly to the separation of long fibres. Keep the account strictly to visible information and clarify the output at each stage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account, and the reader can follow the process from cultivation to finished products. Sequencing expressions such as “Thereafter,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help signal progression, while the stages are grouped in a sensible order. This shows a coherent overall arrangement. To make the progression more flexible and precise, avoid repeatedly introducing stages with “the subsequent step” or “in the following step.” Some links are also slightly awkward, such as “Considering from an overall perspective”; a more direct overview would improve flow. Clearer connections between the material at one stage and its transformation at the next would strengthen cohesion further.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” “yarn,” and “weaving,” which makes the stages generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “culminates” and “subsequent.” However, several inaccurate forms and collocations reduce precision: “diagramatic,” “crused,” “filtured,” and “spining” are misspelled, while “plantation of bamboo” and “manufacturing of cloths” are unnatural in this context. “Cloths” also does not mean garments here; “clothing” or “garments” is more suitable. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling, especially for key technical terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “harvesting, where the bamboos are chop down manually” and a passive construction in “the long fibers are separated from liquid.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the process pertains of nine different stages” has an incorrect verb pattern, and “the bamboos are chop down” uses the wrong participle form. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “from a bamboo” and “make a fabric.” The sentence beginning “In the sixth step, by the addition…” is awkwardly structured. Use straightforward passive forms consistently, and check verb forms, articles, and singular/plural agreement.
