IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.

Overall, this process consists of nine steps, where each one has its own significance. It begins with the cultivation of bamboo tress and followed by next steps such as, filterations, additions of chemicals to soften the fibres etc. At the end, the processed fibres are woven into fabric, whihc is used to manufacture T-shirts and socks.

Initially, in Spring baboo plants are being grown and during Autumn season, these plants are cut down by farmers, each plant has grown successfully. After this, with the help of cutting machine bamboo sticks are cut into strips, followed by crushing the strips to make liquid pulp out of it.

Furthermore, the next step involves filteration where long fibres are separated from liquid, eventually there is addition of water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. Afterwards, to make yarn from fibres spinning is done. Finally, weaving is the process that is used to make fabric and the process end with manufacturing of T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response gives a clear account of the process from planting through to the finished clothing, and the overview correctly identifies the nine-step sequence and the final use of the fabric. It also includes key details such as the seasonal timing, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering, and adding water and amine oxide. This covers the task well, with some features reported in useful detail. However, the overview is partly vague: saying that each step has “its own significance” does not identify the main stages or the process’s overall progression. The description also says the plants are “cut down by farmers,” whereas the diagram shows harvesting, and it could make the transition from yarn to woven fabric clearer. A more precise overview and fuller reporting of the final stages would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages in sequence. The progression is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Initially,” “After this,” “Furthermore,” “Afterwards,” and “Finally” help guide the reader through the process. The paragraph break after the early mechanical stages also supports the organisation. At times, however, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and some connections are not expressed smoothly: “It begins with the cultivation of bamboo tress and followed by next steps” is difficult to follow as written. The overview also lists examples rather than presenting a fully clear summary of the process. More concise transitions and clearer links between stages would make the progression more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “crushing,” “liquid pulp,” “separated,” “soften,” “spinning,” and “weaving.” These terms make the stages generally understandable, and the writer attempts more specific language such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward: “filterations” and “filteration” should be “filtration,” while “each plant has grown successfully” is not a natural way to describe the diagram. “Cutting machine” is less precise than “circular saw,” and “addition of water” would be more natural as “water is added.” Spelling slips such as “tress,” “baboo,” and “whihc” also reduce accuracy. Improving collocations and checking spelling would make the vocabulary more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is used to manufacture T-shirts and socks” and a sequence of clauses describing the processing stages. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “It begins with the cultivation of bamboo tress and followed by next steps” lacks a parallel verb structure; “during Autumn season” needs an article; and “the process end” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence “Initially, in Spring baboo plants are being grown” uses an awkward continuous passive for a general process, where “are planted” would be more suitable. There are also punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in “After this, with the help of cutting machine bamboo sticks are cut into strips, followed by crushing…” More accurate verb forms and sentence boundaries would improve control.
