IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of how fabric is manufactured from the bamboo. It shows step by step method about how to make perfect fabric.
Overall, the process consists of nine stages, starting with planting bamboo plants and finishing with making a clothes with fabric.
At first stage, bamboo plant should be planted in spring. After growing that bamboo it should be harvest in the autumn. Once harvest, it is cut into strips and crush strips to make a liquid pulp. And the fifth stage is to filter because it helps to separate long fibres from liquid.
Following the process, the filter fibres is added to water and amine oxide to soften the fibres and then spin to make yam. After that the process of weave is started to make fabric. In the final stage, the fabric in converted into a clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear start and finish, while covering the main sequence from planting through to weaving. However, the final stage is misreported: the diagram shows finished clothing items, not fabric being converted into clothes, and “perfect fabric” is an unsupported description. Some process details are also unclear, particularly “the filter fibres is added”; the diagram shows fibres being softened by adding water and amine oxide. The response is 142 words, below the required 150, so it does not fully meet the task requirement. To strengthen the summary, describe the final products accurately and include a little more precise detail about the stages and their sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early and later stages in sequence. Connectors such as “At first stage,” “Once,” “Following the process,” and “After that” help guide the reader through the process. This logical progression is a strength. However, some linking is mechanical, and the paragraph break does not clearly separate the overview from the detailed stages. The phrase “Once harvest” also makes the transition awkward, while “And the fifth stage” begins a sentence in a way that feels disconnected. Use clearer stage-based grouping and vary transitions, for example, “After harvesting…” and “The next step is…”, while keeping each sentence focused on one or two connected stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spin,” and “weave,” which allows the reader to follow the general production sequence. There is also some attempt at more specific terminology, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “yam” should be “yarn,” “a clothes” is not the correct expression, and “the filter fibres” does not clearly describe the fibres after filtering. “Perfect fabric” is also an unsupported and imprecise phrase. These errors limit precision, although the main meaning is generally recoverable. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “the filtered fibres” and “produce garments,” and check spelling and singular/plural forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Once harvest, it is cut into strips and crush strips to make a liquid pulp” and “After growing that bamboo…”. The sequence is usually understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “it should be harvest” needs a past participle, “it is cut… and crush strips” does not maintain a consistent verb pattern, and “the filter fibres is added” has subject–verb disagreement. The overview also has article and number problems in “making a clothes.” Build accuracy by using consistent passive forms for this process, such as “the bamboo is harvested,” “the strips are crushed,” and “the fibres are softened,” and check agreement in each sentence.
