IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo in nine steps.

Overall, the bamboo is planted and harvested in the Spring and the Autumn season, respectively. Then crushed strips of bamboo are filtered and softened into spin and then fabric is made.

Firstly bamboo plants are grown in the Spring and are harvested few months after being fully grown in Autumn. After that, these harvested bamboo plants are cut into strips through sharp cutting board. In the next step, these strips are crushed to make a liquid pulp which then is filtered, after separtion from liquid, the long fibres are then softened which is the process of adding water and amine oxide to turn the long fibres into spin.

In the third last steps, yarn is used to make weave from which fabric is actually made. All these eight steps result into clothes, socks and other clothing materials.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having nine steps and cover the main sequence from planting and harvesting through to making fabric and clothing. The overview also highlights the seasonal planting and harvesting and the conversion of bamboo into fibres, yarn and fabric. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram does not say that harvesting occurs only a few months after the plants are fully grown, and the cutting tool is a circular saw, not a “sharp cutting board.” The final stages are also compressed: yarn is spun before it is woven into fabric, and the diagram shows clothing as the final product. To strengthen the response, report each stage precisely and make the overview clearer about the full progression from raw bamboo to finished garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a chronological account of the process. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “After that” and “In the next step” help the reader follow the stages. However, the overview’s phrase “softened into spin and then fabric is made” is difficult to follow, and the final paragraph begins “In the third last steps,” which does not clearly connect to the preceding account. The process is also divided unevenly: the last stages are rushed into a short paragraph, while earlier steps receive more detail. Use clearer transitions and group the stages into a consistent progression, ensuring that each reference—such as “these strips”—has an unmistakable antecedent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “fibres” and “amine oxide.” These terms help describe the manufacturing stages, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate, however: bamboo is cut with a “circular saw,” rather than a “sharp cutting board”; fibres are spun “into yarn,” not “into spin”; and fabric is woven rather than “make weave.” There are also spelling errors such as “separtion.” Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, checking spelling and word forms. For example, use “separated from the liquid” and “the yarn is woven into fabric” to describe the relevant stages accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a liquid pulp which then is filtered” and a passive construction in “are grown in the Spring.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the Spring and the Autumn season” has an agreement problem, while “harvested few months after” is missing an article. The phrase “which is the process of adding water and amine oxide to turn the long fibres into spin” also has an unclear clause structure, and “All these eight steps result into” uses an incorrect preposition and number reference. Practise accurate articles, agreement and passive forms, and divide long sentences when their relationships become difficult to control.
