IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The illustration gives information about how fabric is manufactured from the bamboo. Overall, there are total 9 steps in this diagram to make a fabric from the bamboo plants.
It is quite evident from diagram that in spring we need to plant bamboo plants. In autumn, the work of harvesting the bamboo plants is started then we cut bamboo plants in to strips. After cutting the strips the next step is crushing that strips to make a liquid pulp from it. In contrast, the next step is to filter the liquid pulp to seprate the long fibers from liquid. However, after completing that step we need to add water and amine oxide to soften fibers.
Furthermore, we need to spin the fiber to make a yam from it. The last but not least step of making a fabric from bamboo plants is that we need to weave the yam to make a fabric from it. After doing these all steps we finally make a cloths from it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine steps and report its main sequence, including seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. This gives the reader a generally accurate account of how the material becomes fabric and clothing. However, the overview is limited to the number of steps rather than summarising the process’s main phases, and the final stage is not clearly identified as producing clothing items. Some descriptions are also imprecise: for example, the diagram shows bamboo being cut into strips, rather than bamboo plants generally, and yarn being made before it is woven. To strengthen the response, give a clearer overview of the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments and describe each stage precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a logical order, and the paragraphing separates the brief introduction and overview from the process details. Sequencing expressions such as “In autumn,” “After cutting,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the steps. However, some linking phrases are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately: “In contrast” suggests opposition where the process simply continues, and “However” is unnecessary before the softening stage. The final sentence also repeats the idea of making fabric and clothing without clearly distinguishing the last step. Use a more consistent set of sequence markers, and group the stages into clear phases—for example, cultivation and preparation, followed by fibre processing and manufacture.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibers,” “spin,” and “weave,” which allows the main stages to be understood. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems that reduce precision. “Yam” is used where “yarn” is intended, and “cloths” is not the natural term for the finished clothing shown. Phrases such as “the work of harvesting … is started” and “make a fabric from it” are also awkward or repetitive. Aim for concise process language and check spelling carefully; terms such as “harvest the bamboo,” “produce yarn,” and “finished garments” would describe the diagram more naturally and accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences linked with time clauses, as in “After cutting the strips the next step is crushing…” This shows an attempt to vary sentence structure, and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, however, particularly with articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “there are total 9 steps” needs a more complete construction, while “soften fibers” and “make a cloths” have problems with article or number agreement. The phrase “crushing that strips” also has an incorrect demonstrative form. Practise accurate noun phrases and keep longer sentences controlled; for instance, “The strips are crushed to produce liquid pulp” is both clearer and grammatically secure.
