IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the step vy step process for making fabric from bamboo plants.

Overall,it includes total 9 steps from planting bamboo plants to producing different clothes like t-shirt,shoes etc.

In step one, Farmers will plant bamboo plants in spring season. After that, when bamboo plants become mature it is harvested in the month of autumn.Further more,The branches of bamboo are cuted by the machine to make strips. After that, the cuted strips are crushed to make the liquid pulp. Moreover, Liquid pulp is used for filtering to separate long fibres from liquid.

In step six,The mixture of water and amine are added to soften the fibres. After that, The fibres are spined in a circular shape to make a yam.Furthermore,The yam is used yo make a fabric. After that,The fabric is used to weave the clothes. As a result,The clothes are manufactured and ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as having nine stages and cover the broad sequence from planting to finished clothing, which gives the reader a basic account. However, some details are inaccurate or invented: the diagram shows bamboo stalks cut into strips, not branches, and the final stage depicts clothing rather than shoes or distribution. The overview is also limited to the number of steps and endpoints, without highlighting the main transformation from harvested bamboo through fibre and yarn into fabric. The response is 139 words, below the required 150, and this limits the detail available. To improve, give a clearer overview and report each stage precisely, including filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, spinning, weaving, and the final clothing products.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a brief overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally understandable, and linking expressions such as “After that” and “Furthermore” help show progression. However, these connectors are repeated mechanically, and the middle-to-final stages are not always clearly distinguished: “the fabric is used to weave the clothes” reverses the relationship, since weaving produces fabric before it is made into clothing. Some punctuation and spacing also make transitions less smooth, as in “Overall,it” and “In step six,The”. Grouping the stages into growing and preparation, fibre processing, and textile production—and using more varied, accurate links—would make the progression clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering,” and “fibres,” so the reader can follow the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word-choice or spelling errors reduce precision: “spined” should be “spun,” “yam” should be “yarn,” and “cuted” should be “cut.” “Different clothes” and “make a fabric” are also imprecise or unnatural in this context. Some repetition of “After that” and “used” makes the description less flexible. Aim for accurate process terms and natural collocations, such as “the fibres are spun into yarn” and “the yarn is woven into fabric.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the use of passive forms such as “it is harvested” and “are added” is appropriate for describing a manufacturing process. However, control is uneven, particularly with articles, tense, and sentence boundaries. For example, “In step one, Farmers will plant” shifts unnecessarily to the future, while “the mixture of water and amine are added” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence “After that, The fabric is used to weave the clothes” also has an inaccurate grammatical relationship between the stages. Capitalisation after commas and missing spaces occur repeatedly. Use consistent present simple passive forms, check agreement and articles, and punctuate each sentence carefully.
