IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates how the bamboo can be converted into fabric. In the overview, in the x stage of the diagram, the bamboo plant is in spring in its initial stage they can be harvested in the autumn season, and by the end, the shirt and socks are ready.
At the starting point, the diagram shows the condition of plants of bamboo in the spring season. They can be harvested in the autumn season with the help of a person; they can bring the tool and cut the plants of bamboo. After the cutting, they can be cut into strips and crushed to make liquid pulp. To filter them into the pipe to separate the fiber and liquid. To soften the fiber, they can add amine oxide to the water. They can spin the roll of thread; the reason is that it can be used for weaving to make fabric. In the final step, the shirt and socks are ready.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process from growing bamboo to finished clothing and include several central stages, such as harvesting, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account is only partially complete: the overview is unclear (“in the x stage”), and the final clothing stage is mentioned without explaining that yarn is woven into fabric before garments are produced. Some details are also inaccurate or imprecise: the diagram shows bamboo being cut into strips, but your wording suggests the plants are cut before that step, and filtering is not described as taking place “into the pipe.” To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the agricultural and manufacturing phases, then report each stage accurately and in sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response generally follows the process from planting through to the finished items, and phrases such as “After the cutting,” “To soften the fiber,” and “In the final step” help signal sequence. However, the opening overview is difficult to follow, and the body is presented as one paragraph rather than being clearly divided into an overview and a detailed account. Several transitions are also awkward or incomplete: “To filter them into the pipe…” and “To soften the fiber…” are sentence fragments, so the links between stages are not consistently clear. Use a separate overview paragraph and connect the stages with complete sentences and precise sequencing language, such as “Next,” “Following this,” and “Finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fiber,” “spin,” and “weaving.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of the stages. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “plants of bamboo” is repeated, “roll of thread” does not accurately describe the yarn shown, and “the shirt and socks are ready” is informal for a process description. “Pipe” is also not the clearest term for the filtering equipment. Aim for more precise process language, such as “bamboo plants,” “yarn,” “garments,” and “separate the fibres from the liquid,” while avoiding repeated references to “they.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer structures, including “they can be harvested in the autumn season” and “the reason is that it can be used for weaving,” but sentence control is inconsistent. The opening sentence contains a run-on structure: “in its initial stage they can be harvested,” and the overview phrase “in the x stage” is not grammatically clear. The fragments “To filter them into the pipe…” and “To soften the fiber…” also leave actions without a main clause. In addition, repeated use of “they can” makes the description sound less controlled. Build complete sentences with a consistent present simple passive, for example, “The bamboo is harvested in autumn and cut into strips,” and check punctuation between clauses.
