IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the production of the material which is made from bamboo.

Overall, it is clear that there are several stages involved in the making of bamboo fabric. Some steps are harvesting, filtration and including water and amine oxide and so on.

Initially, bamboo plants are cultivated during the spring season, and in the next season, autumn, crops are harvested by the farmer.

Secondly, the harvested plants are cut into strips with the help of machinery. Thereafter, crushing the strips into small pieces to produce liquid pulp.

Another step is filtration, in which separate long fibres from liquid to make the highest quality fibres and add some water with amine oxide to yield the fibres softer. The next step is to collect the thread and spin it to get a yarn. After that, it can be easier to weave the new clothes or attire as per requirements. After weaving the fibre, it can create a new t-shirt or socks for different sizes and shapes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from seasonal planting and harvesting through processing and the production of fabric and clothing. The overview recognises that the process has several stages, and details such as adding water and amine oxide and separating long fibres are grounded in the diagram. However, the overview mostly lists examples rather than summarising the process’s broad progression from growing bamboo to finished products. Some details are also unclear or unsupported: “make the highest quality fibres” is not shown, and the diagram presents weaving fabric before the final clothing items, rather than weaving clothes directly. Make the overview more informative and describe each stage precisely to strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall sequence, supported by time and sequence markers such as “Initially,” “Secondly,” “Thereafter,” and “After that.” The paragraphing also separates the overview from the process description. This gives the reader a generally clear route through the stages. However, the progression becomes less precise near the end: “After that” and “After weaving the fibre” do not clearly distinguish weaving fabric from making garments, and “Another step” is a broad transition rather than a clear link to the preceding stage. The overview’s list of examples also does not establish the process’s overall direction. Use transitions to show the actual stage relationships and maintain clear references throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “cultivated,” “filtration,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spin,” and “weave.” These choices help communicate the manufacturing stages, and some less common terms are relevant to the diagram. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “the material which is made from bamboo” is vague, “collect the thread” does not accurately describe spinning yarn, and “make the highest quality fibres” adds an unsupported quality claim. “New clothes or attire” is also repetitive, while “different sizes and shapes” is not a feature shown. Prefer precise process terms such as “soften the fibres” and “produce yarn,” and avoid adding details absent from the visual.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a passive construction in “crops are harvested” and a relative clause in “in which separate long fibres from liquid.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. “Thereafter, crushing the strips into small pieces to produce liquid pulp” is a fragment without a finite verb; “in which separate long fibres from liquid” also lacks an explicit subject. The phrase “add some water with amine oxide” shifts into an unclear verb structure, and “it can create a new t-shirt or socks” has an unclear pronoun reference. Build each stage around a complete clause, for example, “The strips are then crushed to produce liquid pulp,” and check that subjects and references are explicit.
