IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the stages involved in the process of making fabric clothes. This is linear process in which clothes is made in the end.
The first stage of this process begins with planting bamboo plants in spring season. The number of plants are grown in large fields. The process of harvesting take place in season of autumn where harvested bamboo collected at one place. In the third stage, bamboos that are collected now cutted into strips, after this in the fourth stage, the strips now crushed and make pulp for further process. In the fifth stage, this crushed pulp filtered through filters and transfered to sixth stage.
In the sixth stage, soft fibers are made in which water and amine oxide are added to fibre to make them soft. In the seventh stage, this soft fibre further spinned to make threads. In the last stage, these threads are used to make fabrics, after completion of this process these fabrics are tranported into warehouses.
In conclusion, these fabrics are tranfered to wholesalers and retialer fo sale, in the end these fabric are purchased by their final users.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and cover the main transformation from planting and harvesting bamboo through to making fabric. Details such as the seasons and the addition of water and amine oxide are accurately reported. However, the account does not fully represent the diagram: it omits the final stage, where fabric is made into clothing, and adds unsupported steps involving warehouses, wholesalers, retailers and customers. The overview is also limited to saying that clothes are made “in the end,” rather than summarising the key stages from raw bamboo to finished products. To strengthen the response, describe all nine stages accurately and avoid adding information that is not shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a chronological account of the stages, and a concluding paragraph. Sequencing phrases such as “The first stage,” “In the third stage” and “In the sixth stage” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. This coherent progression meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the conclusion introduces a separate, unsupported distribution sequence, which disrupts the focus and progression. Some links, including “after this” and repeated references to stages, feel mechanical. Grouping the process into growing/preparation and fibre-to-product stages, with a concise overview, would make the organisation more effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “pulp,” “filtered,” “fibers” and “amine oxide,” so the reader can understand the general production sequence. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems are noticeable. For example, “clothes is made” is an awkward expression, “spinned” is not the correct form of “spin,” and “tranfered,” “retialer” and “fo” contain spelling errors. “Threads” is understandable, but “yarn” would match the diagram more precisely. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling and word forms; this would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, using time clauses and sequencing, for example, “The process of harvesting take place in season of autumn where harvested bamboo collected at one place.” However, errors in agreement, articles, passive forms and verb forms are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to process. Examples include “clothes is made,” “The number of plants are grown,” “bamboos … now cutted,” and “these threads are used to make fabrics.” The response also shifts between present and past forms, such as “begins” and “collected.” Practise forming consistent present-simple passives for process descriptions, such as “the bamboo is harvested” and “the strips are crushed,” and check subject–verb agreement and articles in each sentence.
