IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The production of fabric through bamboo is shown in the given diagram. It shows the whole process of making fabric which starts from a plant.A plant known as bamboo usually used for producing fabric is fertilized in spring. However, autumn is the season of its harvest. The third step is to cut the bamboo into the form of strips. The next step is to make liquid pulp by crushing the strips of the bamboo.A filter is used to seperate the long fibres from the liquid. The filter has a quality to seperate the pulp from the liquid.Adding water and amine oxide, make the hard fibres into soften form. The soften fibres are further rolled to convert them into yam.And after all, the last process is simply to weave to make the fabric which can be produced in any form.It may be a shirt or socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main stages from planting and harvesting through processing to fabric and clothing, and correctly include the seasonal details and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, the response does not provide a clear overview of the process as a whole, and some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bamboo is planted, not “fertilized,” and the fibres are spun into yarn rather than “rolled” into “yam.” The final stage is making clothing from the fabric, not simply weaving it into a shirt or socks. The response also contains 138 words, below the required 150, so the process is only minimally summarised. Add a concise overview and report each stage precisely, including the final clothing step.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and sequencing phrases such as “The third step,” “The next step,” and “And after all” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response a basic overall progression. However, it is written as one continuous paragraph, and some links are repetitive or awkward. The two sentences about the filter repeat the same idea, while “Adding water and amine oxide” does not connect smoothly to the following clause. Use clear paragraphing, for example an introduction and overview followed by the stages, and use concise transitions to show how the material changes from pulp to fibres, yarn, fabric, and clothing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “weave,” which helps communicate the sequence. There is some variety in how the stages are described, but several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision. “Fertilized” does not accurately describe planting bamboo, “yam” appears to be a misspelling of “yarn,” and “rolled” is not the process shown for turning fibres into yarn. “Seperate” is also misspelled, and “soften form” is an unnatural phrase. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “the fibres are softened” and “spun into yarn,” and avoid repeating the filter description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “which starts from a plant” and “Adding water and amine oxide, make…”. The sequence remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “Adding water and amine oxide, make” has an incorrect subject–verb relationship, while “The soften fibres are further rolled” uses an incorrect adjective form. Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops, as in “diagram. It” and “spring. However,” and the opening sentence lacks a clear article or possessive construction. Practise forming accurate passive sentences for process descriptions, and check agreement, articles, adjective forms, and punctuation.
