IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabrication which is made out of bamboo. At a glance, the process is undergone through nine individual stages which includes specifically four imperative stages such as planting, harvesting, filtering and lastly softening. These steps are one of the most crucial steps in this fabrication process.

Overall,it is clear that the whole process in undergoing nine different stages starting from planting and ending at producing fabrics. However, among these stages the most crucial stages.Firstly, planting the right bamboo plants according to a suitable season which is spring.Secondly,in the upcoming autumn the harvesting process will be undertaken carefully by farmers.Thirdly, after the cutting and crushing process the liquidated form of bamboo powders will go through a filteration process where long fibres will be seperated from the liquid.Lastly, the most significant stage is softening the fibres to provide a moistureness to the fabric by mixing water and an acid named amine oxide to make the fabric wearable.

In conclusion, the whole process also tend to undergo with other significant stages such as cutting the strips, crushing the bamboo strips to give it a liquidation form, after softening the fibres making a spin to make yarn and to weave the yarn to give it a shape of fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a broad start-to-finish overview, from planting to fabric production. Several key details are accurately reported, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, filtering to separate long fibres from liquid, and adding water and amine oxide during softening. This covers the main stages, but the overview is weakened by calling four stages “the most crucial” without a clear basis in the diagram, and the final clothing stage is not explicitly described. Some explanations are also unclear or inaccurate: softening does not make the fabric wearable at that point, and the diagram shows liquid pulp rather than “bamboo powders.” To strengthen the response, report the sequence neutrally and describe the final yarn, fabric, and clothing stages more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an identifiable opening, overview, and concluding paragraph, and it generally follows the process from cultivation through manufacture. However, progression is not consistently clear because the overview and conclusion repeat information, while the middle paragraph moves through selected stages without explaining the full sequence smoothly. Phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Thirdly” help signal order, but “However, among these stages the most crucial stages” is an incomplete transition and interrupts the flow. The conclusion introduces further stages rather than simply summarising the process. Organise the body in the diagram’s sequence, use transitions to connect each stage, and avoid repeating the same overview in multiple paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing process,” “harvesting,” “fibres,” “filteration,” and “significant.” This shows an effort to use more formal and topic-specific language. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear: “fabrication” is not the best term for making fabric, “liquidated form” is awkward for liquid pulp, and “moistureness” does not naturally describe softening fibres. There are also spelling errors such as “seperated” and “filteration.” Prefer precise, familiar process terms over elaborate wording, and check spelling and collocations. For example, describe the material as “liquid pulp,” and say fibres are “softened by adding water and amine oxide.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “which” and “where,” and the main process is usually understandable. However, errors in sentence structure and agreement recur and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “the process is undergone through nine individual stages” uses an incorrect passive construction, while “which includes” does not agree with the plural “stages.” The fragment “However, among these stages the most crucial stages” is incomplete, and “the whole process also tend to undergo” has subject–verb agreement and verb-pattern problems. Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after several commas and full stops. Practise complete sentence patterns, agreement, and accurate verb forms, then proofread punctuation.
