IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process chart illustrates, total nine steps of how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Overall, the production cycle started from plant bamboo and harvesting to the final weaving process.Initially, the process started in the spring by planting bamboo from plants, growing untill they are harvested in the autumn. The harvested sticks will go under a mechanical process and cut into strips. These strips afterwards crushed in the fourth stage to covert the solid strips into a liquid pulp.
Moreover, the liquid pulp is poured through a funnel style container to separate the long fibers from liquid at fifth stage. Water and a chemical solution has been added after the seperation process which helps fibres to soften their texture in the sixth process.
However, once softened, these fibres are spinned together to create a tight yarn in the seventh stage. Hence the time to finally assemble the yarn into a sheet of fabric, which will going to help the tailor to finish their clothing for example, stiching socks and t-shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, yarn production and finished clothing, and you include useful details such as the seasons and the separation of long fibres from liquid. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it says the process ends with “the final weaving process,” whereas weaving is followed by a final stage showing clothing. The description also leaves the overview of the complete sequence somewhat unclear, and some details are imprecise, such as saying the fibres are “spinned together.” To strengthen the response, give a concise overview that identifies the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments, then report each stage in order using the diagram’s labels and avoid adding unsupported details about a tailor or how the yarn is assembled.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a generally logical sequence, with separate paragraphs for the early stages, pulp processing and the later production stages. This makes the process reasonably easy to follow, and transitions such as “Moreover” and “once softened” help signal progression. However, some linking is mechanical or not quite suited to the relationship between ideas: “However” introduces no real contrast, while “Hence the time to finally assemble” does not form a clear connection or complete sentence. The overview also says the process ends at weaving, which conflicts with the later mention of clothing. For stronger progression, use straightforward stage markers such as “Next” and “Finally,” and ensure each paragraph and transition reflects the actual sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “separate,” and “yarn,” which helps communicate the stages. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “mechanical process” and “funnel style container.” However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “spinned” is not the correct form for making yarn, “covert” appears where “convert” is intended, and “stiching” is misspelled. Phrases such as “plant bamboo from plants” and “tight yarn” are also unnatural or unclear. Aim for accurate process collocations, for example “bamboo is planted,” “the strips are crushed,” and “the fibres are spun into yarn,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and time expressions such as “once softened.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and verb forms are noticeable. For example, “These strips afterwards crushed” is missing an auxiliary, and “which will going to help” combines incompatible future forms. The opening phrase, “The process chart illustrates, total nine steps,” is also not a complete, well-formed sentence. There are further issues with agreement and articles in “Water and a chemical solution has been added.” Practise consistent passive forms for process descriptions—such as “the strips are crushed” and “water and amine oxide are added”—and make sure each sentence has a clear main clause.
