IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of how fabric is made from bamboo plants.
Overall, this process consist total nine stages, starting from planting bamboo trees to ending up with making fabric clothes. Therefore cutting, harvesting, crushing and certain other steps takes place.
The fabric making process begnning with planting bamboo trees in the season of spring. Then in autum, harvesting is done by an individual and it is cutted into strips by machine. After those strips are crushed in very small particals in machine and converted into liquid pulp. The process of filtering is helps to remove long fibers from liquid before adding soft fibers such as water and oxide.
The soften fiber is spinned to make yarn in a thread type structure which is made in a ball shape . Weaving takes place to make fabric from yarn, which is used to make winter clothes like t-shirt, socks, pants and other products can be used in a daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from planting in spring and harvesting in autumn through processing, spinning and weaving, and you provide an overall summary that identifies the nine-stage process. Most stages are recognisable, but some details are inaccurate or unclear: the fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide, rather than “adding soft fibers such as water and oxide,” and the diagram shows clothing items without specifying winter wear, pants or other products. The overview also says the process ends with “making fabric clothes,” whereas the final stages distinguish making fabric from producing clothing. To strengthen the response, report the stages precisely and keep the overview focused on the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, with markers such as “Then,” “After those strips” and “before” helping to connect events. However, some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “Therefore cutting, harvesting, crushing and certain other steps takes place,” which does not clearly summarise the process. The final sentence also combines weaving, the use of fabric and examples of products in a way that makes the relationship between stages less precise. Use a more direct chronological account and clearer references—for example, distinguish the yarn, fabric and finished clothing stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weaving,” so the reader can understand much of the manufacturing sequence. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “fabric making process,” “small particals,” “soft fibers such as water and oxide” and “thread type structure.” There are also spelling errors, including “begnning,” “autum” and “cutted”; these reduce the precision of the description. Aim for accurate process terms and natural combinations, such as “crushed into small pieces,” “the fibres are softened with water and amine oxide,” and “spun into yarn.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sequence of actions linked with “before” and a relative clause in “which is used to make…”. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are noticeable. Examples include “this process consist total nine stages,” “steps takes place,” “it is cutted,” and “The process of filtering is helps.” The final sentence also shifts awkwardly between a relative clause and a new subject. These errors sometimes make relationships between stages less clear, although the general meaning remains understandable. Check subject–verb agreement and use consistent passive forms for the process, such as “the strips are cut” and “the fibres are filtered.”
