IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of making bamboo fabric.

Overall, from planting to wearble cloths, the process consists of nine statges. Planting and harvesting need to be done in particular seasons and specific reagents are added in the process.

First of all, bamboo plants are planted in the spring, which eventually are harvested by the autumn. After that, the collected bamboo sticks are cut into strips using saws and the strips are crushed into small piceces to make liquid pulp.

From this, long fibres are filtered from the liquid pulp so that it can turn into smooth mixture. Consequently, to soften the fibres collected after filteration, water and amine oxide is added to the product. Then a special spin method is used to make yarn from the soften fibres. Therefore, yarns are weaved by expert weavers or machines to make fabric. Thus, the final product like socks, t-shirts and many more cloths are manufactured from bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full sequence and give a clear overview, noting the nine stages, the seasonal timing of planting and harvesting, and the addition of reagents. Most details match the diagram, including crushing the strips, filtering the pulp, softening the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. The final clothing stage is also identified. However, some details are less precise or go beyond what is shown: the diagram does not specify that the bamboo is cut with “saws,” that the fabric is made by “expert weavers,” or that the fibres become a “smooth mixture.” The overview could also state more clearly that the process moves from raw bamboo through fibre and yarn to finished fabric and clothing. This would make the key features more fully developed and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a brief introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages, with a generally clear progression through the process. Sequencing expressions such as “First of all,” “After that,” “Consequently” and “Then” help guide the reader, and the stages are presented in the correct order. The paragraphing is appropriate and the overall account is easy to follow. Some linking words are used mechanically or do not express the relationship accurately: “From this” is vague, while “Therefore” and “Thus” repeat the same concluding function. The reference in “so that it can turn into smooth mixture” is also unclear. More precise transitions and clearer references would make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “amine oxide” and “yarn,” which allows you to describe the main stages. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “reagents” and “filteration.” However, several word-choice and spelling errors reduce precision: “wearble,” “statges” and “piceces” are misspelled, and “filteration” is not the correct form (“filtration”). “Special spin method” is an imprecise description of spinning, while “cloths” is not the natural plural for garments here. “Collected bamboo sticks” and “smooth mixture” are also less accurate than the diagram’s bamboo and fibres. More reliable collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen the range you already demonstrate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a passive construction (“bamboo plants are planted”) and a purpose clause (“so that it can turn into…”). Several sentences are grammatically controlled, and the sequence remains understandable throughout. Some errors persist in agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “water and amine oxide is added” should use a plural verb, and “to make the soften fibres” needs the past participle “softened.” In “which eventually are harvested,” the relative clause is awkwardly formed; a clearer version would be “which are eventually harvested.” The article is missing in “into smooth mixture,” and “yarns are weaved” has an incorrect verb form. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistent control of agreement and participles would improve accuracy.
