IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process to make fabric from bamboo.

Overall, this process consists of 9 steps which start from planting the bamboo plants in spring. It ends with the manufacturing of different clothes and socks from fabric. Several methods are used to produce simple fibers.

First of all, the bamboo plants are planted in the month of spring and they are harvested in autumn. Then they are cut into various strips followed by crushing the strips to produce liquid pulp . After that, they are filtered where long fibers are removed from liquid. Filtering is essential process to separate the materials from each other

The fibers are softened by putting water and a chemical called amino oxide where they are mixed first and then they are converted to yarn by spinning method. At the end, fabrics are produced by weaving where they are further used to manufacture various clothes and other items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and your overview identifies the start and finished products. Most details match the diagram, including cutting strips, crushing them into pulp and separating long fibres. However, some points are unclear or imprecise: “Filtering is essential process to separate the materials” adds an evaluation not shown, while “different clothes and socks” could more directly report the final clothing items depicted. The description of softening also says the fibres are “mixed first,” which is not clearly supported by the diagram; it specifies adding water and amine oxide. To strengthen the response, keep every detail tightly grounded in the visual and make the overview capture the progression from raw bamboo to finished fabric and clothing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the later stages. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Then,” “After that,” and “At the end” help the reader follow the process, and the order is generally logical. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical, and the paragraph break after “each other” interrupts the flow between filtering and softening. The sentence about filtering being essential also feels detached from the process description. Grouping the stages into clearer phases and using more varied, precise links would make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushing,” “pulp,” “fibers,” “spinning,” and “weaving,” so the stages are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “liquid pulp” and “long fibers.” Some choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “manufacturing of different clothes” is less natural than describing the production of clothing, and “amino oxide” misnames the chemical shown as amine oxide. “Various strips” and “simple fibers” are also imprecise in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Aim for accurate technical terms and natural collocations when describing each transformation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions such as “they are harvested” and “the fibers are softened,” which suit a process description. Most relationships between stages remain clear, and errors rarely obstruct the meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain: “the process to make fabric” would be more naturally formed with “of making,” and “Filtering is essential process” is missing an article. The sentence “they are filtered where long fibers are removed from liquid” has an unclear relative link and would be clearer as a direct passive clause. There is also inconsistent punctuation, including a space before the full stop after “pulp.” Review articles, clause connections and punctuation while retaining the useful passive structures.
