IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates information about the different steps of fabric manufactured from bamboo. Therefore, it showes how to make fabric by following different steps by farmers and others factories.

First of all, people grow bamboo plants in the summer season and they cut those plants in autumn season. Moreover, they will cut it into small strips and those strips make into liquid foam. The fifth step is the filter it and do separate long fibers from the liquid. Additionally, they do soften fibres while adding water and amine oxide. Along with this make a yam by spining it, and weaves make fabrics. The last step is made cloths with this fabric.

To summarise the information, it can be shown that how to make bamboo fabrics while using different steps and make cloths from that fabric. However, there are many steps which followed by the farmers and manufacture's factories and made clothes for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as bamboo being turned into fabric and mention several key stages, including cutting, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account only partially covers the diagram: the initial planting and harvesting are inaccurately described as occurring in summer and autumn, whereas planting is in spring and harvesting in autumn. The crushing stage is also misreported as producing “liquid foam”; the diagram shows liquid pulp. Your overview repeats that there are different steps but does not clearly summarise the process’s main phases, from growing and harvesting through fibre processing to making fabric and clothing. To strengthen the response, report the stages in sequence, use the diagram’s labels accurately, and give a concise overview of how the raw bamboo becomes finished products.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, a sequence of process details and a concluding paragraph. Some sequencing language, such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” and “The last step,” helps the reader follow the stages. However, progression is uneven: “Along with this” does not clearly connect spinning to the previous step, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than adding a useful summary. Several sentences also join stages in a way that makes their relationships unclear, such as “Along with this make a yam by spining it, and weaves make fabrics.” Organise the details into clear phases and use precise links between each stage; avoid repeating the same general point at the end.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “strips,” “fibres,” “filter,” “amine oxide,” “spining” and “weaves,” so the reader can recognise much of the manufacturing sequence. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the process difficult to understand. For example, “liquid foam” does not accurately describe the liquid pulp, “yam” is used where “yarn” is intended, and “cloths” is not the natural term for finished clothing. Spelling errors such as “showes” and “spining,” along with repeated general words such as “steps” and “make,” also reduce precision. Build a more accurate set of process verbs and material terms, and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to describe a sequence using both simple sentences and linked clauses, but the range of structures is limited and errors occur frequently. Subject–verb agreement is inaccurate in “it showes,” while “they do soften fibres” and “weaves make fabrics” show problems with verb forms and sentence construction. The phrase “Along with this make a yam by spining it” is incomplete because it lacks a clear subject, and “the filter it and do separate” is not a well-formed clause. Tense and article use are also inconsistent in descriptions of the stages. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use the present simple consistently for a process: for example, “The fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide.”
