IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrate the complete process that how we get fabric from bamboo. Overall, this process consist of 9 steps, from the production of bamboo to the manufacturing of fabric. First of all, we have to plant bamboo plants in Spring season. After that, we will harvest bamboo plants in Autumn. Then, we cut them into strips. As we know, we can't make any type of fabric from solid bamboo. So, now we will crush these strips of bamboo to make their liquid pulp. We have complete four steps of manufacturing the fabric till now. Moreover, we will filter this liquid pulp and separate long fibres from liquid. In the next step, we will add water and amine oxide in this filter in order to make soften fibres. Additionally, we will spin them to make yam and then convert them into weave to make soft fabric. Now in last step, we can make clothes like shirts and socks from it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages in the correct order, including seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering the fibres, softening them with water and amine oxide, and producing clothing. The overview also identifies the process as having nine steps, and the final examples of shirts and socks match the diagram. However, some stages are described less precisely: “convert them into weave” does not clearly explain that the fibres are spun into yarn and then woven into fabric. The overview could also better summarise the process’s main phases, from growing and preparing bamboo to making finished products. Keep the useful details, but describe each transformation accurately and avoid adding unsupported commentary such as “we can't make any type of fabric from solid bamboo.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the diagram’s sequence, and signposts such as “First of all,” “After that,” and “In the next step” help the reader track the stages. The overall progression is clear, and the overview is placed before the details. However, the single body paragraph makes the stages feel crowded, while “We have complete four steps … till now” interrupts the process description rather than adding useful information. Some transitions, including “Moreover” and “Additionally,” are used mechanically. Organise the response into a brief overview and a clearly developed process paragraph, grouping related stages together. Use linking words only where they show a genuine relationship, and make references such as “them” and “this filter” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “spin,” which allows the reader to understand most stages. Some less common terms are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “yam” should be “yarn,” “convert them into weave” is not the right expression for making fabric, and “add water and amine oxide in this filter” misuses “filter.” “Soft fabric” is also an unsupported description, as the diagram shows fabric but does not specify its texture. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Learn the standard collocations for manufacturing processes and use the diagram’s labels where possible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “After that, we will harvest bamboo plants in Autumn” and “In the next step, we will add water and amine oxide … in order to make soften fibres.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some errors in agreement, verb form, and sentence construction remain. In the opening, “The diagram below illustrate” needs a singular verb, and “this process consist” also needs subject–verb agreement. The phrase “in order to make soften fibres” requires a different verb pattern, while “then convert them into weave” lacks a clear grammatical construction. Use present simple consistently for a process description and check agreement and verb patterns when editing.
