IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram depicts, the process of manufacturing bamboo fabric in nine different steps.

Overall, the unit operation starts with planting the bamboo plants and making yarn out of it which further used in making garments by stitching.

To begin with, during spring season planting of bamboo is performed. Further, once they attains a particular size, farmers starts harvsting and undergoes a mechanical cutting which cuts the bamboo stems into strips. Moving further, these strips were allowed to crush to extract a liquid plup out of it, followed-by filteration which separates long fibers of bamboo from liquid. The soften fibers extracted chemically with the addition of water and amine oxide. These fibres are transformed into yarn by a spinning process. These yarn is used to make clothes by weaving, like t-shirts, socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine steps and cover the main sequence from spring planting through harvesting, processing the fibres, spinning and weaving. The overview also recognises the progression from bamboo to yarn and clothing. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows finished clothing items after weaving, but does not show garments being made “by stitching”; it also does not state that harvesting occurs once plants reach a particular size. Several stages are compressed, and the final clothing stage could be reported more explicitly. The response is below the required 150 words, so it has limited space to develop the process fully. Include a clearer overview and describe each stage precisely, without adding unsupported information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall order: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “Further,” and “Moving further” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from raw bamboo to fabric is generally easy to understand. However, the overview is not fully clear, and the long final paragraph places many stages together without enough sentence breaks. Some links feel mechanical, while “which further used” makes the relationship between yarn and garments difficult to follow. Use a separate paragraph for the main processing stages and connect steps with precise references such as “the resulting pulp” and “these fibres.” This would make the progression smoother and the relationships clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “filteration,” “fibers,” “spinning,” and “weaving.” Terms such as “amine oxide” also show attention to the diagram’s specific information. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, including “unit operation,” “liquid plup,” and “extracted chemically”; spelling errors such as “harvsting” and “filteration” also reduce precision. “Making garments by stitching” is not supported by the diagram, which shows clothing as the final product without specifying how it is assembled. Choose standard process terms and check spelling, and use precise collocations such as “the pulp is filtered” and “the fibres are softened.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “strips ... which cuts the bamboo stems” and a sequence of passive constructions. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “once they attains” has a subject–verb agreement error, “farmers starts” is also incorrect, and “which further used” is missing an auxiliary verb. There are further problems with tense and agreement in “These yarn is used,” while the opening comma in “The diagram depicts, the process” is misplaced. Aim for consistent present simple passive forms for a process description, such as “the strips are crushed” and “the yarn is woven,” and check agreement and sentence punctuation.
