IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given graph provides us some information about the development of bambo fabric. It illustrates some points about bamboo plants, filtration, fabric and how to use it while manufacturing.

Overall, it demostrate the use of bamboo plant that how workers cut into strips to make a fabric and it also shows the process of filtration using water and amine oxide to make clothes.

The given pictures provides information about bamboo plants that largely depends on the cutting process of the plant strips, then crushed it to make liquid pulp and it includes a filtration process that remove long fibres from the liquid for better results. In addition, it adds water and amine oxide to make the fabric more soften.

Although, in the next step the fabric changes into a spin to make yarn, after the weave is used for fabirc and in the last step it is ready to make clothes like shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as the manufacture of bamboo fabric and include several relevant stages, including cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning, weaving and making clothing. The final reference to shirts and socks also matches the diagram. However, the overview is not fully accurate: filtration separates long fibres from liquid, while water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres, rather than to carry out filtration or make the fabric directly. The planting in spring and harvesting in autumn are omitted, and the sequence is not always clearly reported. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the full process from growing and harvesting bamboo through to finished garments, then describe the stages in order with each action accurately distinguished.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details of the processing stages and the final products. Some sequencing is also signalled with phrases such as “then” and “in the last step.” However, the progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph groups filtration with softening, and the final paragraph begins “Although,” even though it does not present a contrast. The description also shifts between stages without clearly marking the full sequence. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for the overview and the process details, and connect each stage with accurate sequencing language such as “next,” “after this,” and “finally.” This would make the organisation easier to follow and reduce reliance on loosely connected clauses.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “liquid pulp,” “long fibres,” “amine oxide,” “yarn” and “weave,” which helps communicate the main subject. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, such as “graph” for a process diagram, “bambo,” “demostrate” and “fabirc.” Some phrases are also unnatural or inaccurate: “the fabric changes into a spin” and “the use of bamboo plant” do not clearly describe the actions shown. Aim for precise process verbs and standard spelling, and avoid using “fabric” for material that has not yet been woven. For example, describe fibres being spun into yarn, then woven into fabric, before the fabric is made into clothing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a longer sentence beginning “The given pictures provides information…” and a sequence of stages joined with “then” and “after.” However, control is uneven, and some sentence structures make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “it also shows the process of filtration using water and amine oxide” incorrectly attaches the softening materials to filtration, while “Although, in the next step…” uses a contrast linker without a contrasting clause. There are also agreement and article problems, as in “pictures provides” and “make a fabric.” Work on subject–verb agreement, complete clause structure and accurate use of linking words. Shorter, clearly controlled sentences would help you report each stage accurately.
