IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Th diagram depicts the process of the production of fabic from bamboo.
The method of fabric preparation consist of nine steps. Firstly, the plant of bamboo which grow in the spring season. In the second step, the plant is harvested in autumn. Moreover, it divides into strips and crush these strips for the production of liquid pulp.
In addition, fileration process start and detache the elongated fibers from the liquid. Furthermore, mitigate fibers produce in the result of filteration. After this, dilute water and amine oxide in the resulted material. Then revolve the slighten fibers to make yarn. In the second last step, the process of weaving the yarn take place to make fabric. At the end, shirts and socks made by this fabric.
To sum up , Although the shirts and socks look simple, but there are many steps involved in making them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the process as having nine steps and cover the main sequence from planting and harvesting through to making fabric and clothing. However, several stages are unclear or inaccurately described: “mitigate fibers” does not clearly report softening, and “dilute water and amine oxide” reverses or obscures the instruction to add these substances to soften the fibres. The overview is also weak: the final comment about the clothes looking simple does not summarise the process’s main features. The response is six words below the required minimum, and some steps therefore receive limited explanation. To improve, give a clear overview of the agricultural, processing and textile-making stages, and describe each stage accurately and sufficiently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the process in the correct general order, and sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” “After this,” and “At the end” help the reader track the stages. The paragraphing also separates the introduction, process description and closing comment. However, some links are mechanical, and the long middle paragraph compresses several stages into unclear statements, particularly “Moreover, it divides into strips and crush these strips.” The final “To sum up” sentence does not provide a useful process overview and its contrast is confusing. Group the stages more deliberately—for example, growing and preparing the bamboo, extracting and treating fibres, then producing fabric and garments—and use clear references to connect each step.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt vocabulary relevant to the process, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “elongated fibers,” “weaving,” and “fabric.” This gives the response some task-specific range. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the process difficult to understand: “fabic,” “fileration,” “detache,” “mitigate,” and “slighten” are inaccurate or unsuitable. Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “the production of liquid pulp” and “revolve the slighten fibers.” Use the diagram’s precise verbs and nouns, such as “filter,” “separate,” “soften,” and “spin,” and check spelling carefully. More accurate collocations would make your description clearer without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both short statements and some attempts at longer structures, including “Although the shirts and socks look simple, but there are many steps involved in making them.” However, sentence structures are often faulty, and errors can make the relationships between stages unclear. For example, “Firstly, the plant of bamboo which grow in the spring season” is a fragment with incorrect agreement, while “the process of weaving the yarn take place” has a subject–verb agreement error. “Moreover, it divides into strips and crush these strips” also shifts between an unclear subject and verb forms. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and consistent passive forms, such as “The bamboo is cut into strips and then crushed.” Avoid using “although” and “but” together.
