IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given process chart shows how cloth is made in a factory with bamboo. The chat has nine major steps and each step plays a vital role. Overall, In the beginning they grow bamboo, then separate fibers from the bamboo pulp and in the end they make clothes.
Firstly, they grow bamboo plants in the spring season, when Autumn comes so they harvest the bamboo. then transport it to the factory, In the third step, they will cut all that bamboo into the strips. After all these procedures, the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp for the next step. In the fifth step, the liquid pulp is transformed into the filter to separate fibers from the liquid to make cloth.
In the sixth step, water and amine are mixed with the fiber for extra softness. the fiber twisted to make yarn spin. the yarn became weaved to make fabric which was shown in the second last step. In the end, the clothes sewed from the fabric and sold them to the shops to make profits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a basic overview from growing bamboo to making clothing, which shows understanding of the diagram’s broad purpose. Several central stages are also included, such as cutting, crushing, filtering and softening the fibres. However, some details are inaccurate or invented: the diagram does not show bamboo being transported to a factory, clothes being sewn, or products being sold for profit. The filtering stage separates long fibres from liquid; it does not transform pulp “into the filter.” The overview also skips the important final steps of spinning yarn and weaving fabric. To strengthen the response, report each stage precisely and avoid adding outcomes that the visual does not show.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable sequence, supported by markers such as “Firstly,” “In the fifth step,” and “In the end.” The paragraphing also separates the overview from the process details. However, progression becomes less smooth in places: “then transport it to the factory” is inserted without support, and the final stages are compressed into short, loosely connected statements. The phrase “In the fifth step” is followed by an unclear description of filtering, while “the fiber twisted” does not clearly connect to the yarn-making stage. Improve cohesion by grouping the stages into clear phases and using accurate references such as “the resulting fibres” and “these fibres.” Check capitalization after full stops, as several sentences begin with lowercase letters.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushed,” “pulp,” “fibers,” “yarn,” and “fabric,” which helps communicate the main stages. There is some variety in how the process is described, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise. “The liquid pulp is transformed into the filter” confuses the material with the filtering action, and “the yarn became weaved” is not a natural way to describe fabric production. “The clothes sewed” also does not express the final stage accurately. Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, such as fibres being filtered, spun into yarn, and woven into fabric. Consistent spelling of “fibre” or “fiber” would also improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sequence beginning “After all these procedures,” and a time clause about harvesting in autumn. However, errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the fiber twisted to make yarn spin” lacks a clear verb structure, while “the yarn became weaved” uses an incorrect verb form. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and capitalization, as in “then transport it to the factory, In the third step,” and “the fiber twisted.” Work on forming complete clauses with consistent tense, for example, “The fibres are spun into yarn,” and use full stops and capital letters to separate each process stage clearly.
