IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram elucidates the various stages involved in the production of bamboo fabric clothes, from the initial planting bamboo plants to the bamboo fabric clothes.

Overall, it is clear that the process inviolve nine main steps initally from planting bamboo plants to sumup with finally bamboo fabric clothes.

Looking at the details, firstly bamboo plants are grown in the fields in the months of springs, followed by manually harvesting by farmers in autumn. Subsecquently, in the third step the bamboo strips is fomed by the cutter, Additionally, strips are crushed to make liquid pulp.

Moving towards the remaining steps, filtration is done to seprate long fibres from liquid, after that soften fibres is formed and water is added along with oxide to make yarn, in the eighth step weave is done to make fabric and then fabric is processed intio clothes in the ninth step and the clothes is ready to wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and include the key progression from planting and autumn harvesting through to fabric and clothing. The seasonal details and the separation of long fibres from liquid are also relevant. However, some stages are inaccurately or unclearly reported: the diagram says water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres, not to make yarn; yarn is produced later by spinning, which you omit. The final clothing items are shown, but the diagram does not state that they are ready to wear. Your overview repeats the start and end points rather than summarising the main transformation from bamboo to finished products. More precise coverage of the later stages and a clearer overview would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the details,” and “Moving towards the remaining steps” help signal progression. This clear organisation is a strength. However, some links between stages are compressed or unclear, particularly the sentence that moves from filtering to softening and then says “water is added along with oxide to make yarn.” This blurs the order and purpose of the steps. The overview also repeats information rather than providing a distinct summary. Use clearer stage-by-stage links and separate the softening, spinning, and weaving processes to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” and “weave,” and the meaning is usually recoverable. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “elucidates” and “Subsecquently.” However, several spelling errors—“inviolve,” “initally,” “fomed,” “seprate,” and “intio”—are noticeable, while phrases such as “bamboo fabric clothes” and “soften fibres is formed” are awkward or imprecise. “Oxide” is also too vague for the diagram’s “amine oxide.” Aim for accurate process collocations and consistent word forms, for example “fabric is woven” and “fibres are softened.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and natural for describing a manufacturing process.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including passive forms such as “are grown” and sequencing clauses with “followed by.” The overall meaning can generally be understood, but grammatical control is uneven. Errors include subject–verb agreement in “the bamboo strips is formed” and “the clothes is ready,” as well as the awkward construction “from the initial planting bamboo plants.” The sentence beginning “Moving towards the remaining steps” also joins several stages with limited control, making the relationships between actions unclear. Passive voice is appropriate for this process, but it needs more consistent agreement and sentence boundaries. Practise forming accurate passive clauses and use shorter sentences when describing several separate stages.
